* Southern Durham is the fastest growing area in Durham.
* There are currently no community recreation centers with a service area encompassing Southern Durham.
* Southern Durham is identified as a priority area for a new recreation center in the Durham Parks and Recreation Master Plan 2003-2013 (shown located in the approximate vicinity of the existing Parkwood Shopping Center).
* The Parkwood Shopping Center is the ideal candidate for a new Southern Durham Recreation Center, with existing parking and all utilities, adjoining community-owned ball field and protected greenways. It is easily accessible from many established and newly-developing Southern Durham neighborhoods.
* The Parkwood Shopping Center currently serves as a community hub for Southern Durham. Multiple community groups use the Library and Parkwood Association Office, and hundreds each week depend on the parking lot to attend church, sports events and numerous community functions. All existing and potential future community uses are in serous jeopardy, as the library is scheduled to move out next year, and the shopping center is for sale.
We, the citizens of southern Durham implore you to proceed with the creation of the Southern Durham Recreation Center at the Parkwood Shopping Center.

- The Parkwood Shopping Center is the ideal location for a rec center for South Durham. For 50 years, the shopping center has served as a community hub. Currently, residents in this part of the city lack easy access to a city rec center. The rec center would provide much-needed recreational facilities for teenagers. I hope the City Council will vote to approve this project.

- This is a no-brainer. Durham should have purchased this property long ago, and now they can do so and for a reasonable price. The current budgetary restraints should not cause Durham to cease thinking long-term. The library up on 55/Alston is destined to become geared toward adults and professionals. We need a NEIGHBORHOOD recreation center for our kids and our retirees, to which they can walk and bike safely (or drive only a short distance). South Durham is as diverse as any area in the city center, and attention in this area is long overdue. Please, no more suburban sprawl.

- This is a great opportunity for the city to purchase an excellent location for a South Durham Recreation center. The infrastructure is there, and the building has been in need of attention for years now. The Parkwood Neighborhood was once an award-winning neighborhood, but it has been going downhill ever since annexation to the city. Durham owes this neighborhood and those surrounding it as much attention as Walltown or any other neighborhood closer to the city center.
