Sub : Petition against the decision of discontinuing admission tests in some disciplines

Dear Sir,

We, the alumni of Presidency College, Kolkata 700073, are submitting this petition to show our concern against the decision of discontinuing the admission tests in some disciplines.

The age-old tradition of taking tests for admission has benefited many bright students who failed to score good marks in board exams for many unavoidable reasons. The admission tests in Presidency College being completely knowledge based, students with keen interest and deep knowledge in a subject always able to get admitted even if they fail to compete with mark sheet score in board exams. Discontinuing the admission tests would shut the door of a prestigious institution to those low-scoring yet bright students. We feel that the decision of doing away with admission tests would strongly affect the quality of students output of the college and therefore would like to request to reconsider the decision.

    • we used to take pride in the fact that we, The Precidencians, are a cut above the rest because the admission test gave us the opportunity to prove ourselves when it came to merit, knowledge and diligence. Abolition of this process will not only get some undeserving "lucky" candidates, but also erase the pride and prestige associated with all of "us" who dream/t of having the honour of studying in the epitome of knowledge.

    • The admission test procedure is also helpful for wb board students who cannot score as high as their cbse and isc counterparts due to the subjectiveness of the syllabus and answers.Besides admission tests also tests direct aptitude of the students as the admission test often asks questions directly related to the corresponding honours subjects. So please let the admission tests remain.

    • I am currently pursueing a PhD in History at the University of Cambridge, which would have been impossible without the admission tests of Presidency College. Though I had consistently scored the highest in history in all internal school exams, my higher secondary marks in history were inexplicable and abyssmal, leading to my inability to even procure admission forms for History honours from all colleges, let alone dream of admission. Presidency College was the sole exception and its admission test gave me the opportunity to beat an unjust system and regain my self confidence. My personal experience might be statistically insignificant, but was nevertheless vital in enabling me to pursue my dreams. It therefeore pains me to see what I was thankful for as a breathing space in an at times faulty or unjust education system being closed off for my juniors. To remove admission tests is to deprive deserving yet wronged students, just because they are a minority and statistically insignificant.

    • I was from WB board.Had there been no admission test,i would never be able to make it to this college. So,to get the best of the lot,Presidency should stick to its own admission test proceedure.
