We, the undersigned residents of Oakland, hereby request that a natural open space park-recreation path be formally established between 4206 and 4315 Rettig Avenue.

This section of road along Peralta Creek is vacant of homes and has served the community as an open space park since 1998. It is closed to traffic, yet accessible to emergency and utility vehicles.

The community has greatly benefited for more than six years. Rettig Avenue provides an ADA friendly connection from the Laurel and Redwood Heights Districts to the ONLY natural open space in the area, and fulfills the objective of the Oakland General Plan (OSCAR, 5-33).

Bicyclists and runners choose this scenic route. Children walk to and from school. Senior citizens enjoy the beauty and sound of the creek throughout the day. Families push strollers and walk with small children. Dog owners exercise their pets safely on the road. Neighbors walk together, and people with limited mobility have access to the natural environment.

Wildlife has also reclaimed Peralta Creek at Rettig Avenue. Owls and Red Tail Hawks have returned to nest and raise their young in the past few years. Deer wander down the road. Even a colony of bats has found home, again.

Communities in Oakland have vacated streets to create parks and civic plazas and to calm traffic. London Road, a street in the vicinity of Rettig Avenue, has remained closed since its landslide over thirty years ago.

The regional community benefits fully from the natural open space on Rettig Avenue. We, therefore, request that an emergency and utility vehicle accessible, natural open space park-recreation path be formally established between 4206 and 4315 Rettig.

    • 1. If the records could be looked at you could see the number of morning accidents on this road. Frequently I would be getting ready for work and the sound of a crash would happen and we would dial 911. 2. Nightly, and I mean nightly, you could hear cars speeding on this road as it is unusual and therefore must have been "thrilling" to speed on it's one lane. 3. As a throughroad this stretch of road was used as a "shortcut" by people that were definately not from our neighborhood. What I am saying if this road was opened it could again be used as an escape route for people we do not want in our neighborhoods, such as drug dealers and petty thieves. 4.. Neighbors often walk on this road with baby carriages, small children, grandparents and pets as it is picturesque. As a through road it is a dangerous venture to walk on it as it is one lane with a steep drop on the north side. Any through traffic would put pedestrians in danger.

    • We walk on in that area all the time, and love it. Friends from other states and countries are amazed that that kind of open space exists within our neighborhood. It's been a great place for teaching our daughter about animals living in urban areas. I could go on and on, but will just say, please, let's keep that space free of vehicular traffic.

    • City Guardians; please keep your good word & promise and do not allow such abuse of land to Laural District neighborhoods. A good turn will reward good politicians whom are far and few inbetween. Amen. Good government is good people helping government as President Jefferson said in the Independence.
