CANADIANS CALL ON THEIR POLITICIANS: TAKE THE PLEDGE
Canadians view medicare as a moral enterprise, not a business venture
Roy Romanow
We, the undersigned residents of Canada, are troubled by those who say that more for-profit health care delivery will solve our health care problems.
The health system belongs to the people of Canada. We own it. We pay for it. Its not the governments to give away. We are committed to do all we can to protect its values and principles from betrayal.
The evidence demonstrates that not-for-profit health care delivery is safer, cheaper, respects Canadian values, and is more accountable than private for-profit and investor-owned health care delivery. It can be a matter of life and death.
To ensure health care is a human right, not a luxury commodity for those who can pay, we sign the MEDICARE PROTECTION PLEDGE, and commit to uphold it through our taxes.
We CALL ON YOU, PUBLIC OFFICE HOLDERS AND POLITICAL CANDIDATES, TO SIGN THE PLEDGE. Canadians insist their tax dollars go for care not for profits. We need to know where our prime minister, premiers, ministers, members of legislative bodies, as well as candidates for such positions stand and we will hold you to account.
MEDICARE PROTECTION PLEDGE
I believe in publicly funded, not-for profit delivery of health services in Canada. Investor owned, private for-profit health care threatens patient safety, universality, sustainability, and undermines Canadian values.
Therefore, I pledge to do all I can to: a) immediately stop any further privatization; and b) to protect and expand publicly funded and non-profit health service delivery in Canada.
LES CANADIENNES ET LES CANADIENS DEMANDENT А LEURS ЙLUES ET ЙLUS DE SENGAGER
NOUS VOUS DEMANDONS, TITULAIRES DE CHARGES PUBLIQUES ET CANDIDATES ET CANDIDATS AUX ЙLECTIONS, DE SIGNER LENGAGEMENT.
ENGAGEMENT А PROTЙGER LASSURANCE-MALADIE
Sincиrement,

- In Tommy Douglas' words: " I'm telling you that, unless those of us who believe in Medicare raise our voices in no uncertain terms, unless we arouse our neighbours and our friends and our communities, we are sounding the death knell of Medicare in this country, and I for one will not sit idly by and see that happen."

- It is time that governments, provincial and federal, begin to listen to its citizens. We are telling you to keep public health care publicly administered, publicly delivered, and publicly funded through progressive taxation.

- It is mandatory that the vulnerable and all peoples at risk of health problem have the supportive protection of Medicare. I believe it is quite clear that policy makers honour that requirement.

- Please continue your support of a publicly funded health care system. Allowing any form of privatization puts us on a slippery slope which will very quickly deterioate into a precipice of private health care.
