Het Poortgebouw is klaar voor de storm. De Vereniging Poortgebouw is een erkende woongroep van 30 bewoners en al 20 jaar lang de wettige huurder van dit Rotterdams monumentenpand. Een uniek sociaal experiment wordt nu bedreigd met ontruiming, om plaats te maken voor het zoveelste prestigieuze kantoor.
Projectontwikkelaar "De Groene Groep" heeft de hand weten te leggen op het Poortgebouw. Voor de prijs van een luxe appartement. De bewoners zelf hadden het ook nog wel kunnen betalen samen, als ze de kans hadden gehad. Te koop? Hun huis? Dat horen ze pas als het verkocht is. De nieuwe eigenaar heeft ideeлn met het gebouw waar de bewoners niet meer in passen.
Het Poortgebouw biedt een vrijplaats voor internationale kunstenaars, musici, studenten en mensen uit vele andere beroepsgroepen. De bewoners delen niet alleen een gebouw maar ook een levenswijze: gezamenlijk problemen aanpakken, kennis en kunde delen, elkaar inspireren en elkaar bijstaan. Van een verwaarloosd monument maakten zij een ontmoetingsplaats voor maatschappelijke, culturele en politieke discussies en activiteiten waar anders in Rotterdam geen ruimte voor zou bestaan. De ondertekenaars van deze petitie betuigen hun steun aan de Vereniging Poortgebouw. De waarde van deze levende gemeenschap is van meer belang dan de zoveelste speculatiewinst. Het Poortgebouw is een investering in de rijkdom van maatschappij en cultuur, van wijk en stad. Een Rotterdam zonder Poortgebouw is een armer Rotterdam. Het Poortgebouw moet blijven.

For the Vereniging Poortgebouw, a living group and the legal renters of this monumental port building in Rotterdam for the past two decades, a much anticipated moment is at hand. The new owners "De Groene Groep", who bought the building for the mere price of a single family home in 2001 ( 400.000 euro), have announced the termination of the rent contract per February 2005. With the 25th anniversary of a unique social experiment approaching, the Poortgebouw is now threatened to be emptied out to make way for a redevelopment into commercial office space.
The Poortgebouw offers a free space for an international living group of artists, musicians, students and a broad range of other professionals to actively propose and test diverse models of living and working together. The once forgotten port building became a haven for alternative cultures and a meeting place to host non-profit social, cultural and political discussions and activities that might otherwise not have a space in Rotterdam. The signatures on this petition are a statement of the local and international support and solidarity with the Vereniging Poortgebouw living group's quest to sustain their way of living and activities in this unique location and remain an important contributor to the diversity of the social and cultural climate in the Kop van Zuid and the City of Rotterdam.

- I stayed in the Poortgebouw for a couple of days, and it is actually the most valuable cultural place I found in all Rotterdam.To destroy this unique, self-organized and internationally recognized institution highly esteemed by artists all over Europe seems the utmost stupidity to me.
