We, the undersigned request that the Parc Palais Condominium Management release their two black tip reef sharks and one nurse shark to Underwater World Singapore. We further urge the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) to ensure that these sharks are released.
The sharks are currently housed in a tank beside the swimming pool. It is clear that the current tank the sharks are living in is far too small, and these suboptimal conditions undoubtedly compromise their welfare.
Nurse sharks in the wild live in an area of a few hundred square kilometres. The nurse shark at Parc Palais was probably caught from the wild and now lives in approximately 0.000000045\% of its natural home range.
Even without taking this point into consideration, it is quite clear that the nurse shark at the Parc Palais condominium is not provided with adequate space. The length of the nurse shark (currently 2 metres) is already longer than the width of the tank. In addition, even if one argues that the tank is sufficiently large now, we still have to consider that the nurse shark will potentially double in size in the near future.
AVA prohibits pet shops from selling sharks as they have a large territorial range in their natural habitat. We urge them to also prohibit the private ownership of sharks for the same reasons.
The unregulated private ownership of sharks in Singapore will potentially contribute to the decline of shark populations in the wild.

- Put a man in a box with insufficient space to stretch his legs...and see how long before he calls for help. The shark can never call for help. We have to be its voice.

- AVA has responded to questions from ACREs and the public in its letter dated Mar 10. Responded but not clarified the pertinent points raised. How can cramming the nurse shark into a tank that's narrower than it's 2m length be "adequate"? And why is the restrictions of fish sales on pet shops not applied to fish farms and their customers? The vagaries of the law in its current state that allows 'flexible' interpretation by the AVA clearly needs to be redefined.

- Sharks belong to the ocean, as do the corals and many marine living beings, and most definitely not in miserable man-made enclosures built by ignorant humans to satisfy their vanity. Must a species become endangered before protection is accorded? Release the nurse shark, and stop all shark sales in Singapore!

- I often wonder why AVA who has the authority to lay laws regarding the rights of animals, often rather take the 'wishy washy' approach. Is it a surprise then the situation concerns the rights of animals have not quite improved over the years.
