We the undersigned represent all families in Ireland we consist of mothers, fathers, grandparents and concerned citizens who are against any change in the current status of child benefit. We oppose the idea to means-test/tax or reduce in anyway child benefit which has been a feature of Irish family life for decades.
We believe that maintaining child benefit is even more important now with the anticipated loss of the Early Childcare Supplement next year. Many families cannot afford this reduction and we believe any cut to child benefit sets a precedent and it is likely to continue with further cuts in later editions of the budget.
This petition is affiliated with PACUB (Protest Against Child Unfriendly Budget) who is a group of concerned parents with no party affiliation. We also provide information for people on child benefit at http://www.childbenefit.info
We the undersigned fully understand that the economy is undergoing a recession; we have already accepted higher taxation, increased levies and salary reductions. We believe we are being disproportionally targeted and we are saying - stop!
Some of us have lost our jobs during this time and we simply cannot afford to accept any further reductions.
Our message in a sentence is - do not touch child benefit.

- This government is disgraceful and should be ashamed at targeting Child Benefit. It was an easy option for them and appalling decision which I will protest against.

- I believe that child benefit is the only State aid that recognises the entitlement of children to be cared for and represented by the State, to remove it is to insult the valuable contribution that both working and stay at home parents of children make to the future of the State by providing for their children's needs and development appropriately.

- Robbing the poor to pay the rich. Cowen is a dictator and he needs to cull his inflated government, halt the continuous bureaucratic blunders which cost the taxpayers millions. Cowen and his ilk are not patriots if so they would put their hands up and admit they are out of their depth with regard to running the country at any time particularly during a credit crunch. There is no money to buy votes now.

- It is a disgrace what this government are doing to this country and its children, the child benefit is now a crucial source of income in our house as my partner is on Disability and I lost my job in Dec so we are now struggling to pay our mortgage and run the house, we need this money to survive, the cut & subsequesnt loss of ECB was enough of a loss to start with, do not touch the Child Benefit, or there will be more and more people in dire straits and how will the economy ever turn around if the country is ripe with poverty, WAKE UP for goodness sake

- I really need that money, leave the kids alone, tax the high earners more, or catch the tax evaders instead
