Several years ago a "Golden Dollar" coin was inaugurated featuring the likeness of Sacagawea, a Shoshone Indian and wife of French-Canadian fur-trader Toussaint Charbonneauwho. During the early 19th century, the couple famously assisted Lewis and Clark in their exploration of the Northwest. While a historically interesting figure, Sacagawea was an unusual choice for a coin. A choice that did not successfully capture the hearts and minds of the American public.

Despite an aggressive marketing campaign, it would be very difficult to characterize the launch of the Sacagawea dollar as anything but a failure. The coin has certainly not come into widespread use as was planned. However, the need for a dollar coin still exists today at vending machines, tollbooths, and other venues. To quote the Denver Business Journal: "Bills generally stay in good shape only a year to 18 months, and when they start to wear out, vending machines have a hard time processing them. Coins, on the other hand, can remain in good condition for as long as 30 years." To put it simply: dollar coins make sense!

Now, with the recent passing of Ronald Wilson Reagan, we are presented with a unique opportunity to honor one of America's greatest Presidents. Loved and respected by millions, a Regan dollar would surely excite the public and reinvigorate interest in, and use of, a one-dollar coin. With the issuance of the Sacagawea dollar, a framework has already been laid in thousands of vending machines nationwide. It's time to expand upon that.

Ronald Reagan restored our nation's sense of purpose and defeated the Soviet empire during his eight years in office. Years that saw the economy boom, taxes fall, and America reclaim its status as the leader of the free world. The Reagan years also saw exciting new technological developments and triumphs of exploration. The space shuttle program, one of our greatest achievements, took its first flight, and overcame one of its worst tragedies, during the Reagan era. These two icons of the 20th century are clearly deserving of great honor.

We, the undersigned, hereby urge Congress to take immediate action by commissioning a new Golden Dollar bearing the likeness of America's 40th President on the obverse, and on the reverse a tribute to the ingenuity and brave explorers of America's Space Shuttle Program.
