CANADIANS CALL FOR FULL IMPLEMENTATION OF ROMANOW REPORT
To Prime Minister Jean Chrйtien and the Premiers of Canada:
We, the undersigned residents of Canada, are eager to strengthen Medicare. We believe that FULL AND IMMEDIATE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE ROMANOW REPORT is an essential step to protect and enhance our most precious public service. Please heed the call of Canadians and work collaboratively to make sure we can count on a strong, comprehensive, and publicly funded, not-for-profit health-care system - for generations to come.
You can do that by: Increasing federal funding for targeted expansion of Medicare. Establishing accountability for health expenditures. Stopping the spread of privatization. Protecting our health-care from trade agreements. Pursuing all Romanow recommendations, including those on primary health-care, home care, pharmacare, funding remote and rural communities, reducing wait times for diagnostic services, and resolving health human resources shortages.
Prime Minister and Premiers, MEDICARE BELONGS TO THE PEOPLE OF CANADA, and we are looking to you for leadership and long-term vision like never before. We want our tax dollars spent on public health care for patients, not for private profits. PLEASE ACT NOW!
LES CANADIENS ET CANADIENNES DEMANDENT LA MISE EN UVRE COMPLИTE DU RAPPORT ROMANOW
Sincиrement,
Soussignйs

- I am Canadian! I pride myself in the fact that the country I live in cares about all citizens and not just the wealthy! I do not want an American system of Health Care!

- There are currently 1-2 year waitlists for children w/ disabilities to be seen by an occupational therapist in the school system. Parents are outraged, blaming therapists, who feel guilty, helpless, and stressed - leaving the job with low retention/care continuity. "There is no money" to create new positions to hire more therapists. With seniors in the community, there is 1 occupational therapist to cover a three hour territory, including 4 nursing homes. Adults with open pressure sores have to wait up to one month to be seen, & then up to 6 months more to receive cushions and wheelchairs to help heal the bed sores (from the Canadian Red Cross, who also feel stressed and helpless to help NB'ers). People with home safety problems, including alzheimer's have to wait up to 6 months for OT service in community setting. There MUST be funding to allow for more rehab therapists (SLP, OT, PT)in schools & community, & major changes to health/ mobility equipment provision process (FCSS, Easter Seals, Red Cross)!!!

- To the idiots who made deep cuts to the budgets of so many of the things vital to Ontario, I just have this to say: We can't WAIT for Election Day!!! Terri McGuinty was actually a teacher of mine, and she will move to Toronto if Dalton's elected, and so will Ontario, upwardwise!

- As an RN I realize that the health/illness care system reqyires change with a prime focus being in prevention. We need to be well prepared to address what will surely be an onslaught of challenges to the health of Canadians and people around the world. SARS has forced us to wake up to the realities of the Global Village and the fact that it's not only a spiritual belief that advises us we ignore the health of this planet at our peril.

- As an Occupational Therapist, I have grave concerns about the state of our health care system. It seems as though millions are spent on studies that, when published, aren't implemented. Make changes. Now.

- MISTAKE: As a graduate of Lakehead University, School of Business, Mr. Romanow, make the great mistake of believing that our current system is not profit motivated. THERE IS NO QUALITY CONTROL MECHANISM, AND THE SICKER YOU GET, THE MORE MONEY THE SYSTEM MAKES. The system rewards poor doctoring, referrals, treating symptoms, and repeat visits. PUT THE DOCTORS ON A FLAT SALARY, a fee per patient per year and then re-eduate them. They currently only "are pawns" for the pharmasceuticals. Look what the cigarette industry has done to us !!
