Dear Prof Mushirul Hasan,

The Delhi Police recently conducted, what is widely believed as a staged encounter, of the men allegedly involved in the 19 September Delhi blasts. Two young men, one of them just 17-year-old, were gunned down in cold blood. Two others were arrested, and two allegedly escaped.

The real drama started a day after as three others Mohammad Shakeel, Zia-ur-Rehman and Saquib Nissar were taken into custody. Incidentally, both Shakeel and Zia are students of the Jamia Milia Islamia university. All three were paraded in front of the media wearing the white and red checked scarf, usually worn by Arabs, also known as the Paletinian rumaal. This was the worst form of racial and communal profiling. The police was quick to brand the three youth as terrorists without actually ascertaining the extent of or the existence of any role in the Delhi blasts.

Soon thereafter, the Jamia Milia Islamia university, with you as the vice chancellor came down heavily on the media for abusing their power and status for launching a witch hunt against a community. You, with the consent of the academic council decided to provide legal help and support to the two students of the university on the premise of innocent until proven guilty by the law.

As fellow students who deplore the recent acts of the Delhi police and the media, especially the television media, we express solidarity with both Shakeel and Zia and stand by your decision to provide them with legal aid. We will do all we can to prevent India from becoming a lawless, fascist state.

In solidarity,

Roshni Sengupta

    • I agree that without substantiating the crime , no one should be dubbed as a criminal or conspirator. unfortunately in this country we get biased very easily first and then start realising the truth.

    • The way the students arrested were paraded on the television screens for lakhs of people to watch was pathetic. Every news channel aired the same footage time and again as if to ignite the ire of people against those young boys. For all anyone knows, they might not have a hand in it at all. How is it that the police came up with evidence suddenly, when 24 hours earlier they did not have any clue at hand at all? Does someone ever realize how these arrests would affect the student community and the trust that students themselves have on one another?

    • While it'd be too premature to comment on the innocence or otherwise of those implicated by the state; its own record is no doubt pretty murky, to put it rather mildly. Very serious and credible doubts have been raised about the shooting campaign. No one has bothered to respond. The faces of three boys arrested were covered by the Delhi police with Arafat towels for the benefit of the media camera, grossly deviating from the usual practice in this regard. This clearly shows up just not the bias of those who are mandated to be unbiased but also a premeditated nefarious move to sensationalise the arrest and further reinforce the obtaining prejudices against "Muslims" as terrorists. Under the circumstances, the bold and conscientious action of the Jamia teachers - cutting across religious lines, under the leadership of the incumbent VC, who himself had once been the victim of virulent Islamic wrath not too long ago, to help the defendants to defend themselves as guaranteed by the Constitution is truly laudable.
