A Change In RTЙ

RTE has become a stale and stagnant organisation. There is a hideous lack of innovation and ideas. People do not need another repeated action movie. They don't want another "crippling investigation" into the health service. They don't want to see repeats of Father Ted, which was turned down by the conservative and insular RTЙ, and went to Channel 4. RTЙ can do good comedy. The Panel and Naked Camera prove this. However, the gems are few and far between. As for documentaries, who honestly wants to see another programme about an unsolved Irish murder from the past or a tired rerun of a documentary involving lions or sharks on RTЙ 2. Priceless Irish talent has gone to Britain. Dylan Moran had his critically acclaimed comedy 'Black Books' shown on Channel 4 and Dara O Briain has his comedy career based mostly in the UK. Not to mention others such as Sean Lock. Drama on RTЙ is shambolic. Fair City is farcical and anything really inventive is swept aside for another generic programme about the gritty reality of peoples' hard lives. To sum up, RTЙ needs an overhaul. It needs to be structured differently. It needs to become more open-minded. It needs to let go of its inhibitions and stop trying to be "modern" all the time. Ireland has talent, and RTЙ needs to become an environment where this talent can grow.
