On Wednesday July 30, 2008, the most heinous crime was committed on a Greyhound Bus, in Winnipeg, Canada. This NEVER should have happened. Please beware, if you dont know of this story, it is extremely graphic and disturbing.
Witnesses said the victim got on the bus in Edmonton, while his attacker came aboard in Brandon and sat away from the victim toward the front of the bus, they said. After a short cigarette break, however, the attacker moved his belongings and chose a seat beside the young man.
Garnet Caton, who was sitting in the seat in front of the victim, said the young man was sleeping with his headphones on when he was attacked. Others say the victim was texting back and forth to an old girlfriend, while listening to music on his cell phone.
Caton said he heard a "blood-curdling scream" and turned around to see the attacker holding a large hunting knife and repeatedly stabbing the victim.
"He must have stabbed him 50 times or 60 times," said Caton, who jumped out of his seat when he realized what was happening and began ushering passengers to the front of the bus.
Caton, the driver and a trucker who had stopped at the scene later boarded the vehicle to see whether the victim was still alive. At that point, Caton said, the suspect was beheading the victim.
The attacker ran at them, Caton said, and they ran out of the bus, holding the door shut as he tried to slash at the trio. When the attacker tried to drive the bus away, the driver disabled the vehicle, Caton said.
RCMP crisis negotiators communicated with the suspect for several hours while he was on the bus. Around 1:30 a.m., he attempted to jump from a bus window and was subdued and arrested, RCMP said.
Here is a list of some violent attacks that have occurred on Greyhound passenger buses in Canada during the past eight years:
-July 30, 2008. Man killed and beheaded on board a Greyhound bus near Portage La Prairie, Man. Police arrest a suspect.
-Dec. 24, 2007. A 27-year-old man is stabbed after an argument with another passenger on a Greyhound bus near Tweed, Ont. A 37-year-old American man is charged with attempted murder.
-Feb. 16, 2007. A group of people in their 20's attack and beat the driver of a Greyhound bus in Lloydminster, Alta.
-Dec. 23, 2000. A man attempts to take control of a Greyhound bus near Thunder Bay, Ontario. Thirty-two passengers are injured when the bus lands on its side in a ditch. One woman later dies of her injuries.
-March, 2000. A pregnant woman is attacked by a man on a Greyhound bus in London, Ont. The woman suffered injuries to her arms.
GREYHOUND BUS NEEDS SECURITY!
We as Canadian Citizens CAN make a difference. Please sign the attached petition if you feel Greyhound needs more security, whether it be metal detectors, bag searching etc. When you go to an airport, they dont leave anything unchecked FOR PASSENGERS SAFETY so WHY is there no security for Trains and Buses?
Please Greyhound - the money spent to ensure your passengers are SAFE is well worth the ride.

- we as customers have options, i personally have chosen bus because of the cost and efficiency. please respect us as customers and value our request for greater safety measuers.. a company with a "we cant" attitude, is a company that i will seriously reconsider ever doing business with again.

- Until security is upped, neither my children nor I will ever travel on a bus, THIS COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED !! Laws and securities need to be rethought as the world gets more and more riddled with crime...is there anywhere safe?

- The situation at hand is an awful one...as bad as it gets!!!as hard as it may be due to the nature of bus travel and the fact that busses stop at rural restaurants and gas stations they need to have metal detectors or do manual searches of people and their bags...this shouldnt ever happen again!!!s

- I , too, have taken the Greyhound bus many times and one ride I was afraid while riding because of a disruptive passenger who was possibly drunk! I was 14 at the time of this incident and the bus driver acted appropriately to the situation and rid of the passenger. He put his life in danger out of the safety of the passengers. We do need security! this shouldnt happen!
