The Chinese martial arts are an important part of an ancient and respected culture. They are practiced by millions of people and promote health, discipline, self control, self defense, concentration and unity.
San Shou is the official competition form of Chinese martial art, established in Beijing, China in 1991. San Shou has had 6 world championships around the globe including Italy, the United States, China, Armenia and Malaysia. There are 89 nations involved in international San Shou competition.
San Shou is recognized by the IOC as a legitimate sport and is under consideration for inclusion in the 2008 Olympic Games.
Despite these facts, the New York State legislature in Albany has enacted a law making ALL Chinese martial arts illegal. The law makes any martial art event not sanctioned by an organization on an approved list illegal. That list does not include a single Chinese martial arts organization.
The New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) has informed the community that despite how unfair this law is, they will enforce it. Since no Chinese martial art organization is on the "approved list", they will close down by force if necessary any Chinese martial art event.
Please protest this unfair law and the refusal by both the legislature and the NYSAC to acknowledge a legitimite martial art, a legitimate sport and a potential Olympic sport

- It is sad and discouraging to all martial artists that a proposed ban on any martial art is being considered. Truly a disgrace to the state of New York.

- just because you are ignorant of these martial arts does not mean you can ban them!

- It is my sincere hope that the NYSAC reconsider their decision. By excluding a Chinese martial arts organization from list inclusion, they are denying a number of martial artists in the state the right to compete in a legitimate and challenging endeavor.

- I really think that is an ignorant thing to do and they should attend an event and try to understand the sport.

- How can you ban a sport and allow the sale of drugs such as cigarettes and alcohol? You are supposed to protect the peoples freedom of choice. If you ban it you won't kill it, it may just become unsafe.

- Before outlawing an honorable way of life please investigate the injuries sustained from other common games such as high school football and hockey. Perhaps this could put things into perspective for those who are outlawing combat sports in NY. I have promoted over 100 full contact bouts with not one serious injury. In the process I have also met a community of the most humble and peaceful people within the combat world. I urge you to reconsider this ban and open myself to any information that you may need in order to do so. Thank you

- The NYS Athletic Commission is obviously totally ignorant of the nature of Chinese martial arts. This proposed legislation is ridiculous.

- Not only these but other credible events such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship must be legalized as well.

- A lack of representation of the Chinese styles is a grevious oversight, regardless as to the sportive or martial nature of the organization in question.
