The Chinese martial arts are an important part of an ancient and respected culture. They are practiced by millions of people and promote health, discipline, self control, self defense, concentration and unity.
San Shou is the official competition form of Chinese martial art, established in Beijing, China in 1991. San Shou has had 6 world championships around the globe including Italy, the United States, China, Armenia and Malaysia. There are 89 nations involved in international San Shou competition.
San Shou is recognized by the IOC as a legitimate sport and is under consideration for inclusion in the 2008 Olympic Games.
Despite these facts, the New York State legislature in Albany has enacted a law making ALL Chinese martial arts illegal. The law makes any martial art event not sanctioned by an organization on an approved list illegal. That list does not include a single Chinese martial arts organization.
The New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) has informed the community that despite how unfair this law is, they will enforce it. Since no Chinese martial art organization is on the "approved list", they will close down by force if necessary any Chinese martial art event.
Please protest this unfair law and the refusal by both the legislature and the NYSAC to acknowledge a legitimite martial art, a legitimate sport and a potential Olympic sport

- This dumb law would also ban the traditional Thai sport of Muay Thai, where people fight with fists, elbows, feet and knees. More people able to defend themselves means less crime and violence. Let this legislation go the way of the dodo bird. Come to think of it, dodo birds must have written it.

- although I disagree with New Yorks ban on Chinese Martial Arts, this could be a wake-up call for all Chinese Martial Arts Organizations to come together and form a unified body. all things happen for a reason, no matter how negative it may seem in the beginning. rest assured that if the Chinese Martial Arts Community come together "as one" the ban will be lifted.

- Please research the current state of Chinese Martial Arts, as well as MMA (mixed martial arts) before coming to any conclusions on the future of these up-and-coming sports in NY State.

- I would like to see all martial arts competitions legalized. Specificly the Mixed Martial Arts compettitions such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship. People who compete in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) don't die as a result of fighting. However, in boxing/Toughman fighters die every year. Even high school football is more dangerous than MMA. Check the stats! And you will see the truth.

- I think the banning of martial arts is disgusting. If a fighter is of age and WANTS to do this, there is no reason the sport of Martial Arts should be looked at as anything other than amazing. With sports such as boxing out there where it's just a feeding frenzy of punches, one would think a chess match such as martial arts would be welcome in ALL states, if not BIGGER than boxing. I whole-heartedly believe that the banning of Martial Arts Events is instigated by poorly qualified individuals. Ask any REAL martial artist and you will find that Martial Arts are not only safer, but provide even a more entertaining form of entertainment. I can not express my sadness to see anyone trying to block martial arts events, and I hope this petition succeeds.

- Who could this unfettered bureaucracy possibly serve? Certainly not the people of NY state. As a current official and former competitor, I know of no more benign sport. There are more injuries in softball.

- Chinese Kung Fu requires more control than of all the other far eastern martial arts.It makes no sense to ban tournaments and would merely drive the legit ones underground.

- I am not from New York, but I believe that Chinese martial arts are just as legitimate, if not more so, than/as Japanese and Korean Martial arts. Whoever had the idea to this law obviously lives in his own world and needs a major clue in.
