The Chinese martial arts are an important part of an ancient and respected culture. They are practiced by millions of people and promote health, discipline, self control, self defense, concentration and unity.

San Shou is the official competition form of Chinese martial art, established in Beijing, China in 1991. San Shou has had 6 world championships around the globe including Italy, the United States, China, Armenia and Malaysia. There are 89 nations involved in international San Shou competition.

San Shou is recognized by the IOC as a legitimate sport and is under consideration for inclusion in the 2008 Olympic Games.

Despite these facts, the New York State legislature in Albany has enacted a law making ALL Chinese martial arts illegal. The law makes any martial art event not sanctioned by an organization on an approved list illegal. That list does not include a single Chinese martial arts organization.

The New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) has informed the community that despite how unfair this law is, they will enforce it. Since no Chinese martial art organization is on the "approved list", they will close down by force if necessary any Chinese martial art event.

Please protest this unfair law and the refusal by both the legislature and the NYSAC to acknowledge a legitimite martial art, a legitimate sport and a potential Olympic sport

    • These current attack on martials arts and MMA is nothing more than racist good ol' boy politics at work. It's OK for boxers to beat the living death out of each other because it's more 'American'. Martial arts are techniques invented in other countries all over the world so it is the 'alien' form of self defense that is attacked. Get your racist policies and opinions out of my freedom!!!

    • I emplore in the strongest sense of the word, that the NYSAC address this quite frankly appaling situation. The combative arts have been the foundation of sports since the early days of the ancient olympiad. To deprive the residents of your fair state of the option of competeting in whichever sport they see fit is too take away their god given rights. Martial arts always have been, still are and always will be the epitome of true sports. Mixed Martial Arts (or Ultimate Fighting/Pankration) is a prime example of a pure sport which is also suffering due to these ludacrous laws. Not only will Chinese Martial Arts suffer but sports such as MMA and thus sports in general will be severly harmed by this ridiculous stance by the NYSAC. Yours Sincerely, Danny Blackwell

    • Chinese martial arts are the basis other Korean and Japanese arts, why do away with them. Some people like sport arts, some like healing, and others like orignal styles. Their is no such thing as a better style, but people have the right to choose which style they want because Chinese martial arts are more then just sports and excerises, The GOVERNMENT HAS NO RIGHT TO PROHIBIT THE FREEDOM OF CHOICE, that is like violating freedom of religion.

    • San Shou competition is merely a Muay Thai match between two unskilled fighters. Regardless of this obvious fact, it should still be legal in NYC.
