We the undersigned citizens of Orange County New York are petitioning the Orange County Legislature to support renovation of the County Government Center and not to build a new government center as proposed by the County Executive.

We feel that the current building is a part of our history and that building a new Government Center will cost the taxpayers too much, introduce major disruptions to the countys ability to provide services, economically affect those businesses that currently provide services to the 523 county employees that will be relocating to New Goshen Government Center and put a huge burden on the County and Village/Town of Goshen taxpayers in the form of addition debt, traffic and infrastructure requirements.

We are urging you to vote for Renovation.

    • I am an architect and have lived in the area since 1969. I remember what I believe was the first time I saw the building when I was a child in the back of my father car driving down the road and a said something like “wohhh…cool”. I have like the building ever since. I wonder if that had anything to do with my career choice? I believe architecture should represent the times the building was built in. I have always appreciated the contrast between this building and the older buildings in town as a statement that the people of the county are (or where) forward thinking.

    • Anything that replaced this building would not be unique. It would be like going back in time and replacing VanGogh's paintings with paintings by another artists that did standard accepted work. Of all the buildings in Orange County, this is one of the few that really qualifies as worth a tourist visit on the architecture alone. I am proud of this building and I enjoy looking at it and going into it.

    • I find it patently offensive to needlessly spend taxpayer money. I view excessive spending as a destructive form of bureaucratic ego stroking. The entire country is going through financial stress. Those in county government had better wake up and respect the people they are supposed to be serving. Don't you dare raise my taxes! Repair and preserve; we don't need new facilities.

    • The only argument against saving Rudolph's masterpiece is permitting Diana to destroy the building and build a new one would make the new building, given Eddie's history, a world landmark in poor design and poor building, likely one of the worst 10 buildings in the world.

    • With the economy in such disarray, the last thing we need is our precious tax dollars spent on something that is not needed and can be fixed. Obviously, our County Executive cannot relate to the struggles that our County people are presently having and facing. I would only hope that each and every tax payer remembers the Government Center and the Valley View fiasco that Mr. Diana has been behind. He is not serving our County in a realistic manner.

    • This is a travesty of deliberate neglect by the County Exec. during his tenure. At this time of severe economic turmoil, he is demanding his constituants/and the next generation to be additionally burdened by an un-necessary deed. He has acsess to funds to restore this structure, yet he blatantly refuses to even discuss or provide the CORRECT data to determine the proper path to take. He has hired a firm who has no experience with a "Rudolph" design. Therefore, how can they give an experienced judgement. Legal action needs to be taken to thwart the plans of a man who "just wants his way" without consideration of the common man and the community in general. Goshen proper could in no way bear the burden of the ediface he preposes to construct. Roads would have to be changed to absorb all the incoming traffic, consolidsting all county offices, would ruin other small business owners in neighboring towns. Already, because of his decision to close the government center, small businesses in the village are suffering. I urge everyone to sign this petition.

    • the oc gov't center building and its roof can upgraded to make it leak proof and energy efficient. the building should last 100's of years if properly maintained. it appears not to have been maintained properly properly over the years.
