We request that the City Council of Edmonton, Alberta and its Community Services Committee allow the Northern Alberta Shooting Association to continue operation of the Strathcona Shooting Range, and extend its lease indefinitely.
The Strathcona Shooting Range is a unique Canadian facility with a long history. Originally, it was developed with federal, provincial and local funds to host international shooting events, specifically the 11th Commonwealth Games in 1978. The continued value and viability of this sports venue is self-evident, as it will be used for the upcoming 2005 World Masters Games. Strathcona puts Edmonton on the International map as no other sports facility does.
Over the years, the Strathcona Shooting Range has been used extensively as a critical training facility to develop Canada's national competitors, preparing them for both the Olympic and Paralympic Games. There is no other comparable range in Canada. By closing this facility, Canada's athletes will suffer. Edmontons tourism industry and credentials as a world-class city will also suffer.
Accommodations to ensure compatibility of land use and limit lead contamination can be made as an alternative to relocating the range. All concerns can be met without the drastic step of re-allocation, since relocation essentially entails abolishment of this expensive facility.
As such, we respectfully request that the City Council of Edmonton reject its motion to terminate the Strathcona Shooting Range lease, and extend its lease with the Northern Alberta Shooting Association indefinitely.

- Shooting is a sport like no other. It develops the complete person both physically and mentally. The responsibility learned from shooting lasts a lifetime while the concentration needed helps individuals excel in school and work. Losing shooting ranges is counterproductive to the youths of the world. Please reconsider closing this fine establishment.

- Uninformed governments or bureaucrats at any level intervening with legislation and regulations is counter productive to public safety with this sport and adds to peoples fear of the unknown! Education and training is the key to success with all firearms issues and this facility sounds to me to be on the proper track for this. Please don't close a facility that offers such vital information and education to shooters and nonshooters alike.

- As an international sports facility in a city desiring tourist dollars, to terminate it's use as a shooting facility, would seem foolish.

- It would be a waste of government dollars to close an already established range, that was built with government money. There are few "world-class" ranges in the world, & they draw competitiors from around the globe to their venues. Don't squander this valuable asset!

- Guns do not kill. Criminals do, with or without guns. Let us not blame the hardware such as clubs or weapons. The accountability belongs to the users.

- In the past decade, the shooting community has constanty been assailed by blind bureaucrats devising new obstacles aimed at preventing the upcoming generation from the enjoyment of the shooting sports. We have to get the attention of politicians, to get our cause on their agenda, as irreperable damage is being done to our sport in Canada.Forming a large and influential lobby and unifying all shooters to join and support such causes as this one, is the only way to wake them up to our cause. We have all had enough.

- The Strathcona Shooting Range was built with Provincial and Federal money and is an outstanding facility of international standards. It is shortsighted and in appropriate to close it.

- I believe that maintaining the facility at Strathcona is essential and ensures that the Canadian Shooting Teams have a place to train for International events. There are too few facilities that are comparable to the Strathcona Shooting Range that allow for the type of facility necessary to promote the sport of shooting.
