We strongly object to the current plans by the London Borough of Waltham Forest for considerably reduced weekday openings of the William Morris Gallery. We also object to removal of the curators of the Gallery's important collection - one of the largest collections of William Morris material in the world. Access and interpretation are crucial to the success of any museum, and to reduce both is unacceptable. The Gallery is a vital international, national, and local asset to Walthamstow, and should be maintained accordingly.

- I was in London 3 weeks ago and made a special trip to the William Morris Gallery on a friend's recommendation. I was very pleased with all the information about WM and would hate to see the gallery cut back or closed.

- Please keep the William Morris Gallery open to the public as it used to be. It's a very important cultural institution not for the Morris fans but for those who are concerned about arts, crafts, politics, and literature.

- I take trips of students from Cambridge University to the WMG every year, and am astonished that the council is considering cutting access to such an invaluable resource.

- The William Morris Gallery is one of Waltham Forest's greatest assets which I would have thought the Council would cherish. I regard the proposals for the gallery as wilful barbarism.

- Most local councils would be proud to have a gallery of international status, and would build upon their strengths by seeking grant aid rather than making cuts. Does the council want Waltham Forest to be known only for its gang culture? This decision is a sign of short-term thinking and mismanagement. I hope there is still time for a re-think. Creative solutions to the budget problem do exist. For example, has the possibility of linking the William Morris Gallery to a higher education institution been fully explored?

- The William Morris Gallery is a superb small museum. It would be a terrible waste to lose the wonderful curatorial staff and reduce public access to its collections.

- I have traveled from the US to do scholarly research at the Gallery and have also featured it in a travel article. It is an irreplaceable resource that Walthamstow should celebrate and work on making better-known, not put off-limits to researchers (which is what will happen if opening hours are so drastically cut and if there are no curators to maintain the collection and assist researchers). There is probably no other Brition, apart from royalty, for whom so many homes and original sites are open to the public. Why doesn't Walthamstow work to make the Gallery, plus Red House, Kelmscott House in Hammersmith, and Kelmscott Manor, plus Morris's first decorating commission (still in use at V&A) and Wightwick Manor, one of his company's biggest commissions, into a "William Morris trail" for school groups and adults?

- The WMG is an institution of international importance. If it is to have a future it cannot be run without expert, specialist staff, especially if the plan is to apply for major project funding, which it sorely needs.
