We strongly object to the current plans by the London Borough of Waltham Forest for considerably reduced weekday openings of the William Morris Gallery. We also object to removal of the curators of the Gallery's important collection - one of the largest collections of William Morris material in the world. Access and interpretation are crucial to the success of any museum, and to reduce both is unacceptable. The Gallery is a vital international, national, and local asset to Walthamstow, and should be maintained accordingly.

- A shame if this important gallery to William Morris is not open to the public to see its own history.

- As Head of Research at the Yale Center for British Art, I am horrified by the threat the the William Morris Gallery. This is a crucial collection and building for scholars around the world, and also a rich and wonderful resource for the general public. The changes proposed - which surely prefigure closure and the dispersion of the collection - would be a blow to the heritage of both the borough and the nation, and would be a terrible blot on the record of Waltham Forest Council.

- This museum is an important part of British design history. It would be a sad day if it were closed and its collections dispersed.

- I have read with interest the comments made by other subscribers. There are two which describe my feelings i.e. the collection is of international importance and the act to restrict access is one of wilful barbarism. Shame on Waltham Forest Council for taking a decision based on gross ignorance and arrogance. To quote 'the evil that men do lives after them, the good is oft interred with their bones'

- These closures are an ill thought through scheme aimed at the short-sighted need to save money. Savings should be found elsewhere. Layers of council administration and Councillor's expenses should be pruned to the bone. This money should then be spent on making the Borough a better place to live in. The WMG and Vestry House should be heralded by the Council as venues of excellence and more money should be voted to them to keep them in the forefront of Borough culture. The proposals by this Council are a disgrace and have lost my support for the future. I was born in Walthamstow and have lived in the Borough for 44 years now; my family have been residence in Walthamstow since 1791. The Borough is dirty, derelict and shabby. The WMG and the Vestry House Museum are the only vestige of history and culture that the Borough has. And you wish to close this. What a pathetic state of affairs.

- I have been a regular visitor to the Gallery for many years and I am non plused by the Local Authorities complete lack of understanding of the fagility of the ancient fabics and wallpapers. These should be kept in a safe and secure environment by trained curators so that they remain a inheritance for the future generations of Waltham Foresters.
