We strongly object to the current plans by the London Borough of Waltham Forest for considerably reduced weekday openings of the William Morris Gallery. We also object to removal of the curators of the Gallery's important collection - one of the largest collections of William Morris material in the world. Access and interpretation are crucial to the success of any museum, and to reduce both is unacceptable. The Gallery is a vital international, national, and local asset to Walthamstow, and should be maintained accordingly.

    • With support from Tony Benn and Ken Livingstone, and so many other well meaning and well informed people, and with Waltham Forest one of the designated Olympic boroughs whose cultural facilties are meant to be expanding rather than diminishing, cannot this Council, who have already refused to allow Waltham Forest to have an Arts Centre, at least concede the importance of the great designer and socialist William Morris. As an ex-Hackney resident, I would be glad to have less well maintained roads in the Borough so that we can respect our internationally famous Morris Museum and local Vestry House which has quite recently been improved so that it could be better enjoyed. And surely there are other ways to raise funding in support of this borough's treasures?

    • It would be a tragedy if access to the museum were limited and especially if the council were to lose the expertise of the extraordinarily knowledgeable staff. They not only organise excellent displays and exhibitions which bring people to Walthamstow from all over the world, but they are also extremely helpful to scholars and students in their own researches.

    • As someone who teaches courses on William Morris regularly to university students I am appalled about the proposals to restrict access to the Gallery and to destroy all that has been built up over the years through the dedication, research and scholarship of the curators.

    • These proposed cuts/closures would be a terrible loss to the local community at a time when social cohesion and lived heritage need all the support they can get. A great cultural and educational loss.

    • Waltham Forest council's relentless campaign against cultural provision for the working class is a betrayal of Morris's principles. The latest cuts have also closed a library and threaten the area's only other council-funded museum; theatres and art spaces have already been lost. The money this will save is less than the payrises the councillors awarded themselves this year. The fact that this threat will reduce the WM Gallery's chance of lottery funding, for an expansion that could make it self-sustaining, shows that it's not to save money but to tell this town's working-class kids "It's not for the likes of you".

    • It is inconceivable to me that English politicians do not understand the relevance of their artistic heritage, the very heart and soul of a nation.
