The proposed State College Area School District 2010/11 school calendar does not align a spring break period with Penn State University.

Recognizing the close relationship between the State College Area School District and Penn State, we request that the SCASD spring break period remain aligned with the spring break at Penn State. The ability for families to spend their break periods together, plus the educational benefits of travel are two issues of great value to the students and families in our district.

For the benefit of the students and families within our district, spring break periods in the SCASD and at Penn State should remain aligned. We request that the Board of School Directors adjust the 2010/11 calendar accordingly.

    • depriving students and teachers one more week of rejuvination will only serve to create more discipline problems towards the end of the year.

    • I would like to request that the SCASD spring break be aligned with the Penn State spring break to coincide with the largest employer in Centre County

    • Penn State is the largest employer and the economic engine of Centre County. Eliminating SCASD/PSU spring break alignment just invites unnecessary absesenteeism. Up until now, my kids have not missed a single day of school in three years. I guess that will be changing.

    • I strongly support the retention of a spring break for SCASD students, and aligning the SCASD break with Penn State's break.

    • Thank you for considering this request. It appears that with some minor re-allocation of off-days, spring break could be added to the schedule while maintaining an adequate number (and distribution) of make-up snow days and ending the school year by Friday, June 10th. Also, there are a large number of days off in November and December (at least at the elementary level) before the holiday break -- so much so that it would be difficult for teachers to accomplish much with their students during those months.

    • I would love to see a full 5 day, Monday-Friday spring break aligned with Penn State's reinstated. This was a yearly family vacation time we were able to use to travel to see out of state family at a time of year not nearly as expensive as Thanksgiving or Christmas. The value of 5 days in a row with weekends on either side gives families much more flexibility with traveling. Reinstating spring break as a full week in March, not over a holiday, also gives teachers a time to travel with their families outside of holidays or summer. It will eliminate the lottery system for which teachers will be granted permission to use vacation/personal days over spring break. It will eliminate the above average student absenteesim that is likely to occur that week anyway.

    • Overall, I think we should adopt a calendar more in line with rest of US. Start earlier, don't close for deer season, include spring break, and end year no later than first week of June.
