Dear Henry Stram,

This letter is a request for you to respectfully bow out of the role of John Singer for the upcoming production "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" directed by Doug Hughes.

Recognize your "hearing privilege" which is akin to the "white privilege" and many other hidden privileges so that social justice shall prevail.

In Solidarity,
Concerned Citizen

    • n this age, there are still unequal situations. First of all, how is a character believable if they cannot draw from background experience? The fact that the hearing actor learned ASL, or rather a poor imitation of it for his role illustrates the fact that a true-blooded Deaf actor was denied the right to show the world that a REAL Deaf person could have made the play more believable. Since when has anyone ever tried to duplicate a Deaf person in these times ? As Linda Bove mentioned that it is akin to putting blackface on white person to play an African-American. Where is the justice in all of this? It lies straight with the director and producers to have the wisdom to know the difference and how to convey the message. Such a shame that this is still taking place in the 21st century with all the knowledge and information, that these so-called "theatrical "people have at their disposal and yet make the mistake of miscasting a hearing person in such a role. Maybe they're not as proficient in "living theatre"

    • opportunities for Deaf artists in theatre and film are already few and piecemeal to begin with, in a field that's practically 99\% hearing--their difficulties are only compounded when hearing actors agree to play Deaf characters.

    • When a hearing person plays a Deaf role in theatre or movie, it is the new form of Blackfacing! Is Blackfacing legal or acceptable in USA? Think about that when it comes to Hearing acting in Deaf roles! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackface
