3/12/09 ABC CHICAGO - "Chicago's Sears Tower will be renamed Willis Tower after an incoming tenant, according to a press release from Willis Group Holdings of London. The insurance broker plans to move 500 associates into 140,000 square feet of space on multiple floors of the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. The building is owned by 233 S. Wacker Drive LLC, a real estate investment group formed in 2004 to purchase the tower."

How do you feel about one of Chicago's iconic towers being renamed after an insurance group you've never heard of before now? Bit by bit we're losing the identifying pieces of our city's heritage and this time I mean to see it stopped in its tracks!

Macy's came in here and unceremoniously dumped the Marshall-Fields name and how did that work out for them? Not so well - sales were far lower than expected because out of sheer stubbornness Chicagoans started shopping elsewhere. Because we Chicagoans take pride in our city and the people and institutions that made us great. What's next if we let this happen unopposed? Renaming the Cubs when they're sold? Renaming Wrigley?? How about the Hancock? Let's show these corporate enterprises that while money can often buy our politicians, it can't buy the people who love this city. There are more of us than there are of them and we should make our voices heard!

Show your support by signing this petition in opposition of renaming the Sears Tower! And then tell your friends and family all about it make a difference!

    • That's great that Willis is moving in, but you don't need to rename Sears Tower after them. It has been Sears Tower for over 30 years and is known across the World as Sears Tower. This would be like changing the name of Buckingham Palace!

    • Sears Tower is part of Chicago and you take another well known name from chicago, this city will go down the toilet. The insurance company will as well, just look out Macy's turned out. NEVER bring a store or insurance from another state. Look what happened when the morons brought a new york city store to chicago.

    • Renaming the Sears Tower would be like renaming the Statue of Liberty or the Golden Gate Bridge. They are American symbols and should never be renamed.

    • Chicago is known for its architecture, culture, and food. The sears tower's name carries with it one of the largest pieces of this culture. Do not attempt to alter something which millions of people recognize as a symbol of a great architectural phenomona. The Sears tower has a stigma of freedom and all that our country stands for, great achievement.
