Fair Fares On Southeastern Trains

We, the undersigned, call on both Southeastern Trains and the Government to reconsider the impending price increases that will hit hardworking commuters and taxpayers from January 2009.

At a time when the economy is in recession, it is the job of Government to try and ensure people stay in their jobs and in their homes. By allowing Southeastern to raise their prices by an inflation-busting 8\% (average), they will be hitting those who need money in their pockets the most. This deal (RPI +3\%) was agreed in 2006 during Gordon Brown's boom. We are now in Gordon Brown's bust, and this deal will effectively cancel out any savings or incentives announced in the Chancellor's recent emergency budget.

Southeastern should reconsider imposing this rise at this time as they will be effectively people off the railway network and out of their jobs. To force their customers off their network at a time when many commuters and their families will be worried about keeping their jobs and paying their bills, it makes no commercial sense to impose this rise at this time. What is the point of increasing fares, if they lose their customers through their greed?

To end, we ask that the formula for this fare increase is recalculated on an urgent basis, and that any rise imposed in January 2009 be in line with current inflation whilst renegotiations take place.

    • Reliability may have improved but we are paying a world high premium for an average service. Rail Infrastructure is sub-standard for the absolutely incredible amount of money that we commuters invest. It's not just unfair - this is criminal and we will now see the inevitable rail passenger strikes refusing to pay to force the issue.

    • The "plus three" rule is not comparable with inflation or wage increases! Perhaps the "minus three" rule could be introduced for every commuter train that is cancelled!
