The California Supreme Court has unequivocally held that same-sex couples have a lawful right to marry under the California constitution. Proposition 8 threatens to overturn the aforementioned decision and eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry. This proposition has created a social movement on campus uniting students, staff, and faculty of all sexual orientations for the sake of freedom and marriage equality.
We the undersigned faculty and staff of Stanford University acknowledge that marriage equality is a fundamental civil rights issue and that marriage should not be denied to any individual based on sexual orientation. We firmly reject Prop 8 as an attack on our community. We value all members of our community equally, and we know that Prop 8 singles out individuals for discrimination. Because Prop 8 would dissolve the marriages of valued faculty, staff, students, and alumni and prohibit thousands of students from marrying the person that they love, we vow to vote no on Prop 8.
We the undersigned faculty and staff of Stanford University also encourage Stanford students and the broader community to vote no on Proposition 8, which would take away a fundamental right from current and future students, faculty, and staff.

- It's outrageous in my opinion that any reasonable person would seek to deny equality for all
