The Division of Information Technology at San Francisco State University has made the executive decision to stop printing the annual Communications Directory, starting during the 2005-2006 school year. As staff members at the University, you may have already noticed the directory has not been delivered, without any explanation as to why. According to DoIT, they are working on creating an online version of the directory.

We, the undersigned, feel that the loss of a printed Communications Directory is a devastating loss. The directory is a tool we use on a daily basis. It provides an instant connection to the rest of the University employees, but it does more than that. It provides TTY instructions, voicemail users guide, a voicemail flowchart, and six different types of listings: Campus Administration, Campus Offices, Campus Fax Numbers, Faculty and Staff, Departmental, and a California State University listing. These listings are vital to smooth operations in all campus departments.

For example: An employee can need the phone number of the person in charge of OneCard, and can use the directory to look up the Cashiers Office under the Departmental listing. From the names listed there, the employee can look them up in the Faculty and Staff listings, and make the best decision as to who to contact regarding OneCard. This would be impossible using the online directory.

We ask that the Division of Information Technology reconsider their decision and start printing the Communications Directory.

    • As a faculty member, I use the printed directory 2-3 times/week and rely on the multiple modes of searching for the information I need.

    • Please bring back the printed directory. Not only does this inhibit the work we all do for the university, but prevents the outside world from contacting appropriate offices. My workload simply doesn't include time to research the hundreds of calls that we receive on an annual basis. Thank you.

    • I can't imagine not having a printed directory. Sometimes I only know the first name and use the directory to find someone. Can't do that online.

    • I often look under a department, knowing only the first name of a person. The printed directory facilitates this.

    • It is close to impossible to function without a current printed directory. Finding people and departments online takes much much longer and forces us to close down whatever we are working on every time someone has a question. It is rediculously time consuming.

    • I am a new employee here at SFSU. Mail service is unable to locate me. I had a package sitting on the shelf down there because they were unable to find me in the directory. It was almost sent back. No one outside of my department can find me, my telepone number or my email address. This is clearly a problem. Please, update you directory. Communication at SFSU is crucial, and at present it is obsolete.

    • There are some cost saving measures enacted by administrative units that make sense. This does not happen to be such a decision, especially since the on line doucmentation is not available. If on line access does become the virtual communications directory, I recommend that listings be done by units and departments as well as alphabetically.

    • I use my directory more often than any other tool, especially when I'm helping students navigate the CSU system. I suggest the decision-makers, in evaluating the directory's cost or value, fully credit the effectiveness of the "paper product". BRING IT BACK!!!

    • The printed directory has helped me find many a person, department, program, etc since starting to work at SFSU. I jealously guard my outdated copy because on-line info is just not as easily navigable, and often i can't find what I'm looking for. Please bring it back!

    • I use my 04/05 directory many times every day even though it is not comprehensive. I've noticed that most of the comments so far have been very polite, so excuse me if I express not just consternation but strong irritation at the lack of wisdom to unilaterally discontinue the directory without consulting the member of the campus community who use this valuable resource. DOIT better have a damn good explanation as to why they think they know our needs better than we do!

    • Faculty and Staff need this important tool to save time. There is no cost savings if the whole campus is using more time to do the same job they used to do. Respectfully,

    • I use the directory to contact people and to help students navigate the system on almost a daily basis. It's convenient to have the printed version at hand in the office for quick reference. An online version is just not the same.
