I wish to express my strong support for the Bowness to Ambleside cycle route, and on developing proper cycle routes within both towns, and call on my county councillor and all relevant public representatives to actively support this route.

The development of this route is vital for many reasons:

1. Every cyclist on the road is one less car, reducing congestion which regularly clogs up the Lake District and costs the UK economy some 20 billion each year.
2. Cycling produces no pollution and helps us to combat global warming.
3. Cycling is an active pastime and helps to tackle rising levels of obesity, especially in the young.
4. Cycling promotes healthy lifestyles and good health. The average cyclist has a fitness level equal to that of someone 10 years younger.
5. Cycle lanes make cyclists safer on the road. Thousands of cyclists are injured every year on the UKs roads.
6. Proper cycle lanes attract visitors and cycle tourism and helps boost the local economy in a sustainable and responsible manner.

Cycling has many benefits, but these can only be realised if we have a safe, convenient and enjoyable cycling environment.

    • I hope that our elected reps show common sense and support cycling and the development of proper cycling routes as a matter of urgency. We need responsible leadership.

    • I strongly support some form of separate cycle/motor vehicle route on the Bowness to Ambleside stretch of road. Cycling along there last week I had two instances of drivers driving dangerously close to both myself and the friend that I was cycling with. This lack of regard for cyclists seems to be a common problem so, on a different note, how about more driver education? Signs around LDNP would be a good start - they are there for motorcyclists so why not for cyclists?

    • This cycle route would make the difference between us being able to ride from Bowness to Ambleside as a family and having to drive. We want to ride!

    • the existence of cycle tracks draws me to a place as road cycling is so dangerous. I dont understand why Britain is so bad in this respect compared with France, Netherlands, Denmark etc

    • Many people drive because they perceive cycling as dangerous, well designed cycle routes would change that.

    • I cycle regularly in the Ambleside area but by choice actively avoid the stretch from Ambleside to Bowness due to the volume of traffic and lack of provision for cyclists. Going ahead with the cycle route would almost definitely chnage my habits.
