Sony VAIO Notebook Computer Memory Issue

This petition has been created to bring public attention to Sony Corporation's growing problem with their VAIO notebook (laptop) computers. The issue stems from the memory SODIMM slots. The solder joints that connect the SODIMM's to the motherboard are breaking, causing one or both memory modules not to be polled, or counted, towards total system memory.

I peronally purchased 2 Sony laptops in late 2002, a GRX580 and an FXA-10. Both are from different "families" of laptops, the GRX being a top-end model. Both exhibit the same problem which likely points to an issue during manufacturing. Sony is charging $700-$1200 for replacement of the motherboards. Both of my affected units were out of the 1-year warranty when the problems surfaced.

Many Sony customers are suffering the same problem with their VAIO notebook computers as well. One online forum tells the story of many affected users, which is at: http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/5449/

I am asking that all owners of an affected VAIO notebook computer sign this petition, and I ask that Sony take action and repair our affected notebooks, free of charge and regardless of warranty status.

    • I've had the exact same problem with a GRV616G six month ago after 10 month of intensive use. The motherboard has been changed. I'm wondering how long the new one will hold. Shame on you Sony !

    • Vaio failed to boot after expiration of warranty. When the memory module is pressed down, it boots. Definitely, the socket is defective.

    • I have had these memory problems on and off since I bought the computer. Now it just won't boot at all and it's no longer in warranty. I'm very upset about this.

    • I am very disappointed with Sony - clearly there is a case to answer. It is likely that by the time this problem surfaces, the notebook (I have a PCG-FX300) is already out of warranty. I once heard that Sony executives believe that every dissatisfied customer goes on to tell 100 other contacts of their bad experience with a Sony product. Sorry Sony - I will never buy another product from you

    • I have been a faithrful supporter of Sony VAIO laptops for 3 or 4 years, however am now totally fed up with the continual failure rate of their GRX series machines we have bought. Even to talk to technical support costs a credit card charge and two machines are now being sent back for the second time for the same problem. A third which was having a very noisy fan sorted by them is being sent back AGAIN because they returned the unit in a worse condition than they sent it. They have no customer loyalty or any conception of customer service

    • First the memory problem, the blue screens of death using the port replicator, now the machine won't provide enough power to complete a boot sequence. HD and AC are fine
