Sony VAIO Notebook Computer Memory Issue

This petition has been created to bring public attention to Sony Corporation's growing problem with their VAIO notebook (laptop) computers. The issue stems from the memory SODIMM slots. The solder joints that connect the SODIMM's to the motherboard are breaking, causing one or both memory modules not to be polled, or counted, towards total system memory.

I peronally purchased 2 Sony laptops in late 2002, a GRX580 and an FXA-10. Both are from different "families" of laptops, the GRX being a top-end model. Both exhibit the same problem which likely points to an issue during manufacturing. Sony is charging $700-$1200 for replacement of the motherboards. Both of my affected units were out of the 1-year warranty when the problems surfaced.

Many Sony customers are suffering the same problem with their VAIO notebook computers as well. One online forum tells the story of many affected users, which is at: http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/5449/

I am asking that all owners of an affected VAIO notebook computer sign this petition, and I ask that Sony take action and repair our affected notebooks, free of charge and regardless of warranty status.

    • I had to go to a local repair service to reconfigure the memory on my FX120. It's a real disappointment to buy a SONY with the expectation of owning a first class unit and get a unit frought with these problems. Recognition and responsibility of the problem is the ethical solution.

    • I bought Sony Vaio FX-210 laptop and within two years, it developed serious problems of blackouts. It is shameful that a company like Sony makes such junky gadgets and then charges several hundred dollars to fix those. We need our laptop to be fixed free of cost!

    • Sony PCG-GRX500 Series 2 years old and cared for properly. Problems with ram sockett. Replacing with a toshiba as i rely on my comp too much to chance it. Will never buy sony again and will tell all I meet the same. They would not do any thing for me and this is not a random issue as too many machines are having the same problem .     • We purchased four of these less than wonderful machines, all have had problems with screens. I hit the jackpot, the screen then the hard drive and finally the memory slot, which basically killed the machine for me. We managed to make one machine from two. The other issue is two out of every three batteries had short operating time between recharge.
