Dear Administrators of Google Earth,

We, the undersigned, through this letter, protest your irresponsible, unscientific actions, and demand an immediate and unconditional deletion of Arabian Gulf from Google Earth.

Arbitrarily designating the Persian Gulf as the Arabian Gulf is an irresponsible violation of all historical and International standards and would undermine the integrity of Google Earth.

For the records, the name Persia has always been used to describe the nation of Iran, its people, and its ancient empires since 600 BC. It is derived from the ancient Greek name for Iran's maritime province, called Fars or Pars in modern Persian, Pars in Middle Persian and Pвrsa in Old Persian, a word meaning "above reproach. Persis is the Hellenized form of Pars, and through the Latinized word Persia, the other European nations came to use this word for the region. This area was the core of the original Persian Empire.

Since ancient times almost all foreigners referred to the entire country as Persia until March 21, 1935, when Reza Shah Pahlavi formally asked the international community to call the country Iran a name that the people of Persia, themselves, used to refer to their country since the Sassanian period. "Iran" means "Land of Aryans". In 1959 some Persian scholars protested to the government that the name change had separated the country from its ancient civilization. Therefore, the late King Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi announced that both Persia and Iran can be used in Western languages.

Without disparaging the Arabs, Iranians are proud of their non-Arab heritage and strongly resent any attempt at denigrating or changing any aspect of their Iranian heritage. And the Persian Gulf occupies a pivotal place in the Iranian history and culture. Furthermore, Iran abuts the Persian Gulf for 2,000 Km, while about a dozen recently-created Arab Sheikhdoms and emirates border the Gulf on the other side.

The historical and geographical name of the Persian Gulf has been endorsed and clarified by the United Nations on many occasions and is in use by the UN, its member states, and all other international agencies worldwide. The last UN Directive confirming the name of the Persian Gulf was (reference ST/CS/SER.A/29/Add.2) on August, 18th 1994.

The worldwide Iranian people are deeply affronted by this arrogant designation of The Arabian Gulf. We demand, in the strongest possible terms, that you take immediate steps to restore the rightful name of the Persian Gulf to the waterway on Google Earth and delete any other arbitrary name. We hope that this notice would suffice and obviates the need for litigation.

    • Ask the Iranians working in Google about the Persian Gulf. They would advise you that there is no Gulf named Arabian Gulf. At least search it in Google and see what is explained over there

    • I still would like to believe that Google would live up to its unbiased professional responsibility in respecting the undisputable historical fact and stay out of geopolitical conflict of the Middle East and permanently delete the Arabian Gulf from Google Earth and let the Persian Gulf be as it always has been. Thank you.

    • "Persian Gulf" has been the official name for this part of the world for many centuries. Now, Iran is under attacked by Arabic allah for the second time, and the Mullas' regime cannot and doesnot protect Iran. Are we civilized world, slaves to Arab sheiks' money? "Persia" represents one of mankind's cradle of civilization. It belongs to all humanity.

    • I suppose it is a recognizable verb 'Arabian' as opposed to 'Persian'. The verb 'Arabian' has a dark, sinister ring to it while 'Persian' emanates a safe, docile signal. I remember a Wallace-Shah interview in the 70s where Pahlavi corrected Wallace when he inadvertently used the term 'Arabian Gulf'. Pahlavi was an effective teacher in that respect. He asked Wallace how was he taught in school to refer to the Gulf. Wallace smiled shy. May I ask Larry Page and Eric Schmidt how were they taught in school to refer to the Gulf. Larry, Eric, if you smile, a correction is in order.

    • Well how about calling the Gulf of Mexico the 'Gulf of Florida', the English Channel the 'French Channel', the Irish Sea the 'British Sea' next (one might as well try such innovative names as anging the 'Indian Sea' for the Arabian Sea, or the Arabian/African Ocean for Indian Ocean ! Such changes of name, wheather out of ignorance, or due to shifts of policy (e.g. to enrage one governments &/or please another/others) leave a much more profound resentment/contempt on nations, than governments: the latter only come & go! I really can't see how two such widely acclaimed and highly accredited organizations as the National Geographic & Google could make such an obvious mistake within a period of 3-4 years!

    • You could have better chance calling it Islamic Gulf, however, you then face the dilema of changing the name of Mediterranean sea to Arabian Sea, cause all the Eastern (except a little piece) and Southern shores are occupied by Mulims who are also mostly Arabs. But you wouldn't dare cause Jews and Christians will linch you! So stop the stupid game and come to your senses. Go read Geography 101 before playing your idiotic game! PERSIAN GULF is forever you arab sucker!
