During our campaigning we have become increasily aware of the concerns Carlisle citizens feel about the governance of Carlisle Renaissance and future plans for the proposed delivery mechanism for Renaissance. So far the preferred option is to set up a Carlisle Renaissance Board.

This Board will consist of nine members; five will be from private business, two from government quangos, one from the City Council and one from the County Council. The Chairperson from private business will have the casting vote. This is handing over our city to those whose only interest is in making a large profit.

- Who will The Board be accountable to?
- What happens if they do not deliver?
- What is there to prevent the business developers giving themselves or each other lucrative contracts?

As a longer term measure and to help fund the Renaissance, the City Council is also proposing to set up a Local Asset Vehicle. This will be a public-private partnership, ostensibly to manage the Citys property.
What safeguards will be in place to stop the best of the City Councils assets (our ratepayers assets) being stripped by private investors?

If you are concerned about the above, and would like a public enquiry into the future governance of Carlisle Renaissance please turn up on the 4th February or write to the local paper letting them know your concerns.

    • It is unclear how the proposals purport to benefit the community generally and more specifically those directly affected. Management of such a scheme ought to be transparent, accountable and the rewards to the community ascertainable, which is not apparent here. There is the wider issue of respect for family life and the community as a whole and whether community interests take precedence over financial interest. Have the proposals trully been demonstarted to provide any positive benefit to the people of Carlisle?

    • I wonder if the director of the Renaissance board and all those FOR the proposals would be happy to be turfed out of their chosen homes and relocate their treasured families in order to fulfil a commercial viability?

    • The actions taken by Carlisle Rennaisance, and supported by the City's Conservative majority, in seeking to support business developers to the detriment of homeowners within the Rickergate area is reprehensible, and totally unacceptable. Rickergate's residents - having suffered homelessness as a result of the worst floods in living memory - are now threatened with losing their (newly refurbished) homes on a permanent basis. Well done Carlisle Council, nature's action in temporarily creating misery for Carlisle residents can be seem as a portent for something much more enduring, the permanent destruction of a viable community. Talk about an own goal! I call upon Carlisle's councillors to wake up and see Renaissance's action for what it is - a means of creating profits for out-of-town 'developers'. Get real Carlisle, do some research and recognise that ignorance is no excuse - certainly not where people's homes are at risk.

    • Please Carlisle City Council, Keep what is left as Carlisle as unique and do not turn the centre into another faceless city that can be seen all over the UK. Exploit our history and cultural heritage, which will earn just as much money as private business. Rickergate area is the last of our proud tight knit communtiy from the Victorian era and early 20th century, please keep it that way.

    • My family live and work in Carlisle (Tyson, Harding and Tweedie). For generations my great great grandmother, great grandmother and grandmother all lived and worked in Rickergate. I know how important this area is to the community and to my family memebers who still live there. Save, promote and utilise this area as it has been the very fabric of a changing community for centuries.Listen to the people who live there instead of the beaurocrats that don't.
