We, the undersigned, are residents of the State of North Carolina and supporters of afterschool programs for the Youth of North Carolina. We believe in the importance of providing opportunities for success for youth with factors that place them at risk for dropping out of school, involvement with gangs or delinquent behavior. We petition the Senators and Representative of the State of North Carolina to continue FULL FUNDING for the Support Our Students Programs that were instituted by Governor James Hunt.

    • While we don't use various after school programs, there are families that couldn't survive without them. Investing in our children must remain in our forefront as they are the future.

    • Cutting SOS will usher in a whole new age of misconduct for children who have no one to supervise them afterschool. It would be a complete shame.

    • How can we expect our parents to get and retain jobs if they have no quality after school care? How do we keep our kids from running the streets after school with no after school care? How can we help those students who need remediation after school with no after school care?

    • SOS is a wonderful program for students to be involved in after school. It is a very valuable resource for parents that are not able to home by the end of the school day. It offers a safe place for kids to go to be involved in community based activities as well as offering academic assistance for those that need a little extra help. My child has been involved in the SOS program and I can say from experience that SOS has been the key to my child's success in school.

    • We keep saying our children are the future and then, when money gets tight, they are the first ones overboard. If we want to reduce crime and prison costs we need to make the upfront investment in our children's future. Stop being penny wise and pound foolish and fund this program.

    • Gov. Perdue has elected SOS be cut from NC's budget because it is either inefficient, too expensive or nonessential. Over the course of the eight years our county has operated SOS; over 1,000 youth have been influenced by this program. When it comes to children, especially the middle school population that doesnt have many alternatives after school or during the long days of summer; how is that inefficient, too expensive or nonessential? However; if Governor Perdues proposed budget is approved by the Legislature, the effects on the juvenile justice system for not having the SOS program available to prevent youth from being involved in dangerous and risky behavior, would be very inefficient and expensive due to the elimination of one very essential youth program.

    • We need our funding in Transylvania county for our children and the families that live here to be able to work full time and not have to worry about where our children are or what they are doing. These programs provide ways for our children to be safe while being in a more structured setting.

    • The SOS Program has been a valuable asset to the students of Camden County. We work very closely with our JCPC Program. In fact, it was our students and one of our high school volunteers that worked so deligently to save the JCPC funding last year. In essence, I guess we are sending the message to our students that they should look out for themselves and forget about helping others. The very students who were essential in saving the JCPC programs will be the ones who are left alone after school. It is very likely that some of these students will actually need JCPC services if SOS funding is eliminated. Wasn't the point of the funding supposed to keep the kids out of the system? I am more than willing to take a cut in pay to save these programs. How many of our leaders are willing to do the same?

    • Please do not end this important program. Camden County needs this resource for our youth. There are no other programs or opportunities in this area capable of serving the number of students currently served by SOS. This is a valuable and much needed service!
