We, the undersigned, have a proposal we would like you to consider. We believe that the present situation regarding the adjustment of Social Security benefits for married couples is unfair.
Currently when a couple, both on Social Security benefits, gets married, their benefits are cut almost in half, yet their expenses do not decrease, especially not that drastically. This also makes it much more difficult for them to find homes as many places require that tenants make three times the rent, which two roommates barely achieve if at all. This is a key reason why many couples on Social Security do not get married, as much as they would like to. Many feel they are being penalized by the government for doing so.
We propose that an amendment be made to the Social Security Act, stating that Social Security cannot reduce a married couples' benefits by more than $100 solely on the grounds of their marriage. This amendment can be adjusted at your discretion, however any modification lowering the amount Social Security can deduct would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much for your consideration.

- With our current economy in the state it is, most households are struggling to survive. Those on SSI are struggling more, due to the current amount of money that SSI awards its current recipients. While SSI is a good form of income for those who need it, it doesnt adiquatley support someone who has to rely on it. To add to this factor, people are on SSI because they have been deemed to have a disability, which makes it harder, if not impossible for them to get a job. Married couples can usually use a duel-income to help support their family and their household. With SSI enforcing reductions on married couples, this is impossible.

- America is supposedly based on Judeo/Christian values, but, it forces us who are on Social Security to remain unmarried! It's hard enough to barely survive on this income, let alone get married, and lose half your benefits, just doing what's right!!

- This does not affect me directly but I believe incomes should not be affected by marriage. The womans money is hers and should stay that way.
