Petition of Cambodian Americans, Immigrants and Refugees living in the United States of America regarding the Detention and Deportation of Cambodian refugees with criminal records by the Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE)
We, the undersigned Cambodian Americans, Immigrants and Refugees living in Massachusetts and all over the United States of America would like to submit this petition to the United States government which firmly expresses the following:
* We denounce the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) sweeps and raids in our communities and the deportation of 15 Cambodian refugees on August 14, 2008.
* We strongly urge the United States government to abolish the current unjust immigration laws whose only purpose is to detain and deport the Cambodian refugee with criminal records who served his or her sentence for his or her crime.
* We believe that once a person served their sentences for their crimes they must be able to live their rehabilitated lives here in the United States of America with their loved ones.
* We strongly urge the United States government to spend resources to prevent people from committing crime rather than spending it to break families apart by detaining and deporting them.
* We are asking the Cambodian Consulate and the Cambodian Embassy to take a stand and conduct an investigation to advocate on behalf of the community and not to sign off on any more deportation.
* We appeal to all Cambodian Americans, Immigrants and Refugees all over the United States to come together to bring change to this unjust immigration systems.

- When will this country stop being a human rights abuser? When will I be proud to call myself an American? We need change. Not just change of government but change of how we think, live our lives, treat others, etc.

- Part of the taxes we pay goes to our jail facilities. Why should the deportees family members pay taxes for other criminals to be in the US jails while their loved ones are in another country. NOT FAIR!!!

- America should try to find ways to solve the problem and not push the problem back to the original county where these immigrants came from.

- I hope that Congress would take some time from their busy schedule and review this petition. I am a Citizen of the United States. I was also a refugee from Cambodia. Some of these "criminals" are my friends. I grew up with them. I saw fist hand their broken homes. I lived in poverty with my family. I was the lucky one. My parents drill the importance of work ethics and the law. Some of my friends weren't so lucky. Their parent's either couldn't finds work because of their lack of speaking English or they had mental conditions that were never treated properly. We the children of refugee parents suffer. Some ended up in juvenile hall, jail or death. Most of these "criminals" did their time. They paid their price. It took them a lot longer to change. Now that they are bettering themseleves, please don't take that away. Please don't take them away from their family the way we were taken from our homes when we were just babies.
