This petition is to stop ACTA(Anti-counterfeiting Trade Agreement). The ACTA is an international treaty that will create problems such as these.

(Via http://boingboing.net/2009/11/03/secret-copyright-tre.html)
" * * That ISPs have to proactively police copyright on user-contributed material. This means that it will be impossible to run a service like Flickr or YouTube or Blogger, since hiring enough lawyers to ensure that the mountain of material uploaded every second isn't infringing will exceed any hope of profitability.

* * That ISPs have to cut off the Internet access of accused copyright infringers or face liability. This means that your entire family could be denied to the internet -- and hence to civic participation, health information, education, communications, and their means of earning a living -- if one member is accused of copyright infringement, without access to a trial or counsel.

* * That the whole world must adopt US-style "notice-and-takedown" rules that require ISPs to remove any material that is accused -- again, without evidence or trial -- of infringing copyright. This has proved a disaster in the US and other countries, where it provides an easy means of censoring material, just by accusing it of infringing copyright.

* * Mandatory prohibitions on breaking DRM, even if doing so for a lawful purpose (e.g., to make a work available to disabled people; for archival preservation; because you own the copyrighted work that is locked up with DRM)"

With this petition we hope to stop the unelected officials proposing this treaty, and keep the internet free.
We must also remember this is just the first in may steps to take our other freedoms away.

    • This is insanity, that we allow our leaders to meet in secret and pass these draconian laws bypassing our democratic processes, and sit idly by doing nothing. This must be stopped.

    • This is a prime example of what is wrong with politics today. Most United States citizens aren't even aware that this piece of legislation is being drafted.

    • I can't believe the publicists for these companies don't warn them about the backlash of negative public opinion these kinds of business deals generate. To bring legislation in to harshly penalize people in this digital age is creating all kinds of ill will, towards the companies and the legislators they are influencing. This is a very disturbing idea that our freedoms of expression and communication, freedom of speech, dreaming about the idea of the pursuit of happiness. These are public memes in America today. What it seems you have here is the last gasps of breath from a very dying record and entertainment industry forms trying to grab more power and potential money in lawsuits and prosecutory acts against their one time customers! I am appalled! I know a lot of very good people who are really upset by this idea. I know the world of business is very competitive. These record/entertainment companies are a bunch of guys who want to make monies and they already have the lawyers!
