Goans affected by destructive mining -

Wanton open-cast mining in Goa has devastated the countryside, destroyed forests and severely damaged valuable water resources. Entire villages have seen their crops destroyed by mine slurry and their land reduced to desert. Seby Rodrigues (please see http://mandgoa.blogspot.com)is an activist who has been in the forefront of the fight against irresponsible mining that pays no heed to the devastating consequences it unleashes on the environment and people.
Because he spoke up against Formento, a mining company owned by the Timblo family from Goa, they have chosen to try and silence him. They have sued him for 500 crore rupees (about 125,000 US dollars) for 'defamation' for what he has said on his blog. This suit has been brought by Sujay Gupta the Vice President of Communications for the Timblos. The suit has been filed in Calcutta so that Seby will face further harassment and have to travel up and down.
We are appalled at this attempt to bully and silence a legitimate voice.
We stand with Seby against destructive mining and against all attempts to muffle legitimate voices in a democracy. We stand with Seby in decrying the destruction of Goa's environment by mining companies like the Timblos, and urge minions like Sujay Gupta to sue us too...

- The destruction of nature must stop immediately! How can such a fruitful country like India allow this kind of behaviour? Money can never replace the splendour and grace of nature. This entire act is part of mankind's arrogance and if it doesn't stop, the consequences will be grave. Money will NEVER replace a beautiful tree or flower!

- A $100 million suit for comments of legitimate concern made by a person who doesn't eat three square meals a day? A petition at the Calcutta High Court for an issue located in Goa?

- How dare a handful of men hold an entire state to ransom by systematically chipping away at what is largely its natural resources. How will they justify their stand to their own children and decendants once we have no more water to drink and clean air to breathe. Stop the digging today.

- This man needs to be heard, read & helped. Prosecuting him is a diversion to take up his time & money to stop him from speaking out against the open-cast mining, legal or illegal this has to be investigated. Money is power to those who will diminish Goa & its people.

- Why do you choose to destroy our haven? Goa, according to the Puranas, is one of the most sacred spaces on this Planet. Please, please try and understand the power you have - you have the POWER to ensure that GOA retains its biodiversity. YOU have the power to be become a CUSTODIAN/GUARDIAN. Please take the time to contemplate what you (the government, and individuals concerned) can do to conserve this very, very precious piece of earth . You are blessed. Become custodians, not destroyers.

- A suit filed in Calcutta is a clear indication of harrassment on top of the ludicrous amount of 500 crores. First of all, has Fomento really `lost' 500 crores due to the blog? Secondly, if they feel the need to sue Seby, is there something wrong with Goa's courts?? Shame on Sujay who was such a champion of Goa not so long ago. How come this U turn?

- I'm the guy who filed this petition at the behest of Venita Coelho from Moira, Goa, a columnist with the Herald. I have just been informed that 500 crore is actually $ 100 Million and not the paltry $ 100 thousand. Just pass this correct amount ahead in your comments, so that it is corrected as the signatures pile up. Pass this on please, to anyone who knows and loves Goa...thanks!
