A number of local Shepherdstown bands will no longer be written about in the Picket, Shepherd University's own campus newspaper. The soul reason for this denial of print coverage? The affiliation with a local record label, who the editor-in-chief feels has recieved enough attention. For those bands who have never graced the pages of our campus newspaper, or never even so much have been mentioned in it's pages, this is a huge disappointment. After seeking promotion and local attention through this record label, we are denied that very thing by the campus press.
Whether you read the Picket or not, or could care in the slightest about what is printed and what isn't, this hurts local bands, and if you support them, then you should support this, as well.
This is a big, uninformed, and thoughtless policy made on the part of the Picket's staff, and we feel it should be changed. If you care for local music and want many of the great bands from Shepherdstown to be given the attention they deserve by their own campus newspaper, please join this group sign the petition below.

- However much I like fleetwood mac, they have national press coverage at their fingertips, why not write about local acts with WORLDS less in terms of press coverage. It's a campus comunity for crying out loud- these bands are part of that comunity and deserve the same attention as any act coming through.

- Not reporting on local bands is absolutely ridiculous. That would be like the City Paper not reporting on Baltimore local bands because of Wham City.

- Shepherdstown's underground music scene is tremendously undercovered. And even if it weren't, local music is ALWAYS worth promoting. It is a struggle by itself trying to make a living doing music, let alone trying to make a living without press. The Picket is another potential news source for strapped-for-cash musicians unable to afford advertising space. Please cover local music in the Picket.

- The campus paper is just that, a campus paper whose sole purpose should be to bring the school and community news of local and community events - regardless of their affiliation with a particular record label. This is revealing a bias in print and it's unethical.

- As a free source of news for poor college students, the Picket should reflect the interests of the people reading it. The local music scene could ALWAYS use more support; in a community that is widely appreciative of arts (musical and otherwise), the more coverage there is of local art the more support the artists will recieve from the community.
