Jacksonville Beach Pier 300ft.Surfing Ban
In the last two months alone, fishermens lines have been deliberately cut, accidentally entangled, and entire rigs (rod, reel, hook, line, and sinker) deliberately pulled over the rail buy surfers, and lost. This is approximately a $300.00 investment.
Most fishermen cant cast over 300 feet from the pier. A 300-foot no surfing zone surrounding the pier would eliminate the possibility of any of these acts re-occuring, providing its enforced. The ordinance is already on the books but it is just not being enforced.
The pier was built to generate revenue for the City from Tourists and Fishermen.
If the Street Address of the already established ordinance is corrected, and Law Enforcement Officers are asked to address this growing problem, we can peacefully co exist.
Last week an altercation between a surfer and a pier angler ensued on the pier. Fisticuffs took place, and the surfer was injured. This could easily escalate into a more serious encounter with mortal implications.
The signed supporters of this petition in conjunction with JacksonvilleBeachPier.com implore you to correct and strictly enforce this ordinance (that has been on the books for over five years), before things reach that level of violence.

- If the law is enforced the issues with surfers and fisherman would go away. It is the fact that the surfers get to close to the pier that starts the alltercations.

- This has been going on since the 1960's and no one has done anything to stop the surfers. They rule just like the moffia.

- I am an annual visitor and during my visit in February it was necessary to limit the distance of my casts due to the close proximity of the surfers.

- What a shame. The fisherman have approx 20 x 1300 to fish while the surfer has miles to surf. Generational gaps and different cultures can coexist but it always seems a struggle to create acceptance.

- Police (the old moto) to Protect and Serve,(what happen? I know they are there, I see them giving tickets and watching the young ladies! If they would enforce the laws No body would be fighting. Maybe this will help the RIGHT people to take action? There is enough fighting going on with the WAR and all, lets ALL work together. It would not hurt for us to be less prideful? There should be signs put up on the outside of the pier stating the law and codes, the county (state) should pay for them? They are making money on the ENTIRE deal and we are out here trying to relax with fishing and or surfing,so why are we put into a situation that BELONGS to the law defenders? WHY? Notify a TV station and Im sure they would enjoy doing so. We need to use the powers around us to do the jobs they are paid for, right? OR take a offering to provide these signs? That does not sound good, right? I agree, we need to have a person become a squeeky wheel, that works more than not.... Push for signs with penalty. Ray LaMot

- it is inevitable that someone will be seriously injured if the existing laws are not enforced.the proposed 300 yard buffer zonewill allow fishermen tofish and the surfers to surf without confrontation.i suggest that the confiscation of surf boards together with a monetary fine may serve as a deterant to surfers who beak the law.

- Why do we have to bend our backs for surfers when we spend lots of money to rebuild the pier, so please tell surfers to stay 200 feet away from it!

- why would you not enforce this? Surfing too close proposes several dangers and offers liability to jacksonville beach because they don't enforce it.

- If 300' is too far, pick a more reaonable figure, (no less than 50 yards) and ENFORCE IT ! Put an achored bouy off both the South and North boundary and sink 2 pilings at the MHW point on the beach so everyone's clear where the line is.

- The pier is for fishing and enjoyment. 600' of fishing area already protected for fishing, by law! Surfers can use the remaining 130,000 feet of beach front!
