Lewisham Council are currently consulting on plans to make major improvements to Sydenham Road. The plans are available to download at http://www.lewisham.gov.uk/Environment/Regeneration/SydenhamHighStreet/MapSydenhamHighStreet.htm
A petition titled Save Sydenham on the Downing Street website opposes the councils plan for improvements to Sydenham Road. The details of the petition do not bear comparison with the published plans; nevertheless it garnered 415 signatures before closing in April of this year. The petition is mainly concerned with traffic congestion, despite the fact that Sydenham Road is currently a single carriageway road and will remain so after the improvements have been implemented. If anything, the planned improvements will actually ease traffic congestion, thanks to changes to the road layout at junctions and crossings.
The Downing Street website states that the Government is unable to intervene in the matter as Sydenham Road is the responsibility of Lewisham Council. However, the petition is an obstacle which must be overcome if the plans are allowed to go ahead.
We fully support Lewisham Councils plans to make improvements to Sydenham Road and refute all claims made on the Downing Street Save Sydenham petition. We believe that the implementation of the plan will improve Sydenham for the benefit of residents and visitors. We see the improvements as an essential part of the regeneration of the area, complementing the arrival of the East London line extension.

- I thoroughly support this intention to improve our high street. It is badly needed and I am very impressed with the attention to detail and the efforts gone to to consult with local people. Any concern at traffic disruption is surely misguided. Sydenham Road is single lane now and will be single lane following the imrpovements.
