Replace Proprietary BIOS with Coreboot in System76 Machines

Are you the Author?
We the Undersigned would very much like to see System76, a distributor of GNU/Linux powered hardware, to begin shipping their machines with Coreboot as a replacement to the standard proprietary BIOS that are currently shipped in most computers. Proprietary BIOS are contradictory to the very nature of Free and Open Source software. We would like an alternative.

Coreboot (http://www.coreboot.org) is Free Software licensed under the GNU GPL, and would really tie in well with System76's dedication to the Free Software and Open Source communities. Coupled with their Ubuntu offering, it would finally provide a vendor willing to truly free their hardware at the deepest level. The importance of such an offering would be fantastic for Free Software enthusiasts around the world.

    • I'd need the system to use a modern fast CPU, support at least 4GB max RAM, and run a totally free GNU/Linux system like gNewSense before I'd buy one (I'm willing to install gNewSense myself). A free BIOS is a big step in the right direction and I like that very much but a free BIOS alone plus a bunch of proprietary dependencies won't secure my purchase. I understand one can run wireless without firmware now (certain radios don't need firmware at all). I don't want the proprietary firmware Ubuntu ships in their Linux kernals nor do I want the promotion of proprietary software and services Ubuntu also includes.

    • I'm not going to promise to buy from System76 rather than from a competitor like ZaReason, but I do know that my next laptop purchase will not run Windows and I will use the support of free software in my decision.

    • I've been considering buying a System76 laptop when this old Thinkpad finally bites the dust, since I have a couple of friends who have and love System76 computers. For me, coreboot would be a killer feature, and there's no way I would buy my next computer from anyone else if I could be given a superfast-booting free software stack from top to bottom.
