Save The Landmark Cooling Towers!

The demolition of the Tinsley Cooling Towers in Sheffield was announced 0n the 28th September 2006 by its owners e.on UK. These towers are historic to Sheffield and symbols of a once great industry in the city. They now provide a landmark gateway to the industrial centre of Sheffield, and are one of the citys only remaining iconic landmarks. If these towers are to be demolished I know I speak for many people when I say that the city will lose a great part of its identity and the towers will be sadly missed. In the past there have been several plans involving ideas of restoring them as a landmark, which is still just as possible if they are saved. This petition allows the people of the city, and those who know it, to decide what happens to the cooling towers.

We who sign this petition may be either admirers of the structures and the city, Historians, architecture enthusiasts or those who feel for this cause. Either way we strongly believe that the Tinsley Cooling Towers should be saved from demolition.

    • They mark the gateway to Yorkshire and represent Sheffield's industrial heritage in the most dramatic way. It is inconceivable that Sheffield City Council could allow their demolition. SAVE OUR TOWERS!

    • So few industrial heritage structures remain in Sheffield and these towers symbolise the true wealth makers of the city, namely the people who laboured in the steel industry and their employers

    • This is a unique icon, it's proximity to the M1 makes it a very memorable and industrial scenario, should it be on your conscience that future generations will not be able to enjoy it too?

    • These towers represent our industrial heritage; the hard work and ingeniuty of ordinary people that the city is founded on. So so short sighted.

    • To take these down would be a disgrace , what if someone had decided the same about the Eiffel tower or Tower of Pisa in past decades. They are part of Sheffield's heritage and should be kept and listed.

    • The Towers should be turned into Artwork with Steel Cutlery displayed from the top of one, and twirling Steel Flowers from the other. Some similar Towers in France have colourful paintings on them.

    • This is a more important landmark for the region than 'The Angel of the North'. This is the type of cultural vandalism that nearly demolished St Pancras station in the 60's!

    • Big Business should not have the power to demolish 'cultural heritage'. This is primarily a 'national' asset, not primarily a 'corporate' interest.
