The Washington County School District recently made a decision that all sports at the 9th and 10th grade levels will not be played next year. This is due to budget cuts in the school district budget. While we recognize that there are tough decisions to be made, we also do not believe that this is an acceptable choice in cuts. We are petitioning for the School Bard to take another look at the options, and this includes at options that may not include school funds to be used for these sports. We believe that these sports build character and discipline, and that the effects of the sports programs not being available to those who want to participate may have effects that outweigh the budget concerns.

If you agree that the sports programs are not an acceptable budget cut, please sign below. We invite all who are 8th grade students or higher, former students and parents to participate in the petition. We ask that at this time only residents of Washington County, or those whos children attend a Washington County School District school sign the petition. You can email individual comments and we will deliver them as well. The email is sportsareimportant@gmail.com. We want to complete signatures by 04/06/09.

    • Let's reevaluate and make better choices, isnt that what we are trying to teach the kids? Cutting the sports programs really is not a wise choice!

    • KEEP the sports in schools. Our children do not deserve this. They learn lifelong, valuable lessons in sports, it helps with their academics, & helps some children get into college. This is ridiculous, give the parents an opportunity to step in & help. Have anyone thought of moving us back to 3A? There are plenty of things to reconsider before making such a drastic change in our childrens lives.

    • Maybe the Real rock on the new County Courthouse was a higher need than our Childrens Future!! Smart! Many families have sacrificed a lot, and spent THousands of dollars for there children to excell in sports in a chance of scholorships. Wow! Way to prioritize!

    • Sports are some kids ticket to college. If you take away two years, that will put them way behind. Also, after school activities has been proven to keep kids out of trouble. You will have a lot of bored kids on your hands!

    • Sports build character, require kids to get good grades and encourage team work. I guess that the childhood obesity epidemic isn't important to the school district either. Don't short change our children. Why is this even an issue?

    • Kids need a way to be healthy and stay away from drugs, I feel that school sports is a good way to do that. I do believe that it would be a mistake to take this away from them. They will find a way to stay busy, we need to decide how we would like them to stay busy.
