Throughout 2003 and into 2004, TOKYOPOP Inc. commissioned a survey on its website that asked manga fans to request titles for TOKYOPOP to license. A massive campaign culminated in fans of the "Slayers" anime, novel, and manga franchise to request the original "Slayers" novel series on which the anime and manga series were based.
On March 3, 2004, TOKYOPOP formally announced (LINK) its acquisition of and intent to publish "Slayers," a 15-book Japanese novel series written by Hajime Kanzaka and illustrated by Rui Araizumi.
TOKYOPOP established a website (LINK, SCREENSHOT), to promote the series. The site makes a distinct and explicit point of stating the series consists of 15 books, the first of which was released in the United States by TOKYOPOP on September 7, 2004. TOKYOPOP's summarizations of the novels went up to Book 6, the release date of which was December 13, 2005.
In November 2005, TOKYOPOP, when asked by a fan via e-mail when it would be releasing Book 7, TOKYOPOP responded with the statement that it would no longer be publishing the "Slayers" novel series.
In December 2005, TOKYOPOP announced in its official newsletter that "The novel series that sparked the anime-manga phenomenon comes to a rousing finale!" with Book 6. This is clearly not the case, as the series finale is contained in what should be Book 15.
The fans of "Slayers" are deeply disappointed in TOKYOPOP's decision to cancel the series. Before TOKYOPOP's acquisition of the series, several fan projects were working to translate the novels for English-speakers. When TOKYOPOP announced it had acquired the series, all fandom work voluntarily ceased. Even though TOKYOPOP is stopping its production and translation of the series, it still holds the license to the English-language version; fan projects will still be prohibited even though they will pose no competition to TOKYOPOP.
QP/Diana, a Japanese "Slayers" fan who runs QP's Slayers Page, previously provided rough translations of portions of the novels (LINK). When TOKYOPOP licensed the series in the United States, she removed her translations. However, summaries of each novel remain. By reading the summary of Book 6 (LINK), it is clear that it is not the end of the "Slayers" novel series.
As earlier stated, "Slayers" fans are deeply disappointed in TOKYOPOP's lack of commitment. What once were feelings of gratitude and deep respect for the company are now reduced to mistrust and resentment. "Slayers" fans feel misled and underrepresented, and many will voice their concerns by refusing to purchase TOKYOPOP's products.
We, the Undersigned, request that TOKYOPOP continue translation and production of the English-language "Slayers" novel series through its true finale, Book 15. TOKYOPOP should honor its commitments to manga and novel fans regardless of what series it licenses.

- I am very displeased with Tokyopop's decision to stop translating the novels while not letting anyone else get a chance to finish them. I am hoping this is just a mistake, but until then..

- Please keep releasing all of the Slayers novels! It is my favorite anime series still to this day and I have always wished for the day when someone would pick up the novels to be translated. I was estactic beyond belief when Tokyopop released the first six and I am anxiously awaiting to read volumes seven through fifteen. Please please please continue for the sake of other loyal Slayers fans such as myself!

- Although I live on a tight budget, I've made a point of buying up each novel as soon as it's been released. I've been waiting a long time for this. If I can live off ramen a couple days a month in order to afford buying them, TokyoPop should keep printing them!

- How rude can you get? If you license a whole series, you translate the whole series, and you do it well. Period.

- I'm very disappointed to hear the possibility that there will only be 6 novels released by Tokyopop when I know originally there were 15. I really hope they decide to continue to translate and release the novels.

- I can't believe they're only translating to volume 6. This is incredibly unfair. I'm going to start thinking twice before buying Tokyopop's products now. I've lost faith in them.

- I've always loved Tokyopop's work on the Slayers manga and other series. To be able to read the Slayers novels is something that I hoped for ever since I entered the Slayers fandom, but I never thought it would become true... That was until Tokyopop announced that they would be translating them. I was ecstatic. I've bought everyone one released so far and I've loved the quality, but now this? The Slayers fans have already had to go through this when CPM canceled the Slayers manga at the last volume. This situation is ten times worse than that because the novels are so much better and you're cutting us off a lot sooner. Please don't make the Slayers fans have to go through that again. If you have to stop production of the novels AT LEAST stop at volume 8 when the first plot arc ends. It seems like you think that the Slayers fans are stupid by stopping in the middle of a plot arc and trying to pass it off as the end, when Tokyopop has already established that there are 15 novels.

- Like every other Slayers fan I was very thankful for Tokyopop's decision to translate the Slayers novels and they have been doing a good job on it. Even fans from all over the world like me are reading and enjoying them. All of us hope and beg of you to continue the great work and translate the remaining novels of the Slayers series. Please don't leave your fans hanging, Tokyopop!

- I have bought every Slayers novel since they came out, and I have even gone against my own wishes to save up for an apartment to purchase volume 5. Seeing that you will stop after volume 6 is extremely disappointing, and I hope to see you change your mind about releasing the novels or giving the rights to translate and distribute to another company.
