We would urge the Planning Inspector to preserve the rural character, tranquil setting and historical importance of the Bartlemas Conservation Area, East Oxford and ensure it is does not fall victim to inappropriate development. We oppose Oriel College's plans to build student housing three floors high and uproot the orchard on the former nursery site. We also believe no part of the allotments should be lost to future development.

    • The Bartlemas Conservation Area has previously been described as one of Oxford's hidden jewels, and I believe it would be an abuse of its stewardship for Oriel to proceed with such an unsympathetic and oversized development.

    • This place is a small gem - surrounded by a busy urban area. Please keep it the way it is.

    • Although I have previously expressed support for this development, further information, and particularly photographs which show the effect it would have on the views into and out from the conservation area have changed my mind entirely.

    • Following the development of student housing some years ago there has been an increase in parking problems as a result - in line with residences concerns and contrary to the Planning Inspectors findings. Sadly more student housing will no doubt exacerbate this. While local residences will be extremeny concerned by this, of equal importance is the incremental approach and slow erosion of the conservation area and the adjacent land by Oriel College proposals. Moreover, there will be a continuing deterioration in the demographic balance between local residents and students.

    • I think it is a terrible shame to fill up yet another green space in Oxford. Have all alternatives really been explored?

    • I went to Bartlemas and the whole area holds very dear memories for me, my friends and my family. It would be a complete abomination to destroy such an amazing part of East Oxford and it's community.

    • I think it's really important to preserve the nature of the current built and natural environment of the Bartlemas Conservation Area, to maintain a manageable balance between the built and natural environment, to avoid putting further pressure on local infrastructure and services, and for the health and well-being of people living in East Oxford, which is already a very densely populated area.

    • Bartlemas (St Bartholomew's) leper hospital and chapel were founded in the 12th century by Henry I. Along with the farmhouse they deserve preservation. Students need good accommodation but the planned development is out of keeping with the character of the area.
