Increase State of Ohio Funding for Public Transit

State of Ohio funding for public transit has been reduced by 75\% since 2001. While the typical state in the nation provides 23\% of the funding needed for the transit systems in their state, Ohio provides less than 3\%. While the citizens in Ohio have repeatedly stated that a more comprehensive public transit network is needed just to meet their basic needs to get to jobs, school and medical appointments, transit funding cuts have forced many transit systems to reduce critically needed transit service and to raise fares. This petition urges the State of Ohio to identify a reliable, adequate and dedicated funding source for public transit, and to identify an immediate source of emergency funds to preserve existing services.

    • I strongly support the proper maintenance, and the expansion of public transportation in Ohio. I am well aware that many potential employees cannot readily access the jobs located in spread out urban areas, particularly during the late night shifts open to new hires.

    • increased state support for Ohio public transit is essential, and critical, for economic recovery; in my own community, I see how cuts in public transit have cut jobseekers access to potential employment sites, and impacted schools whose children have relied on public bus transportation that is declining as did the school bus system funding before it disappeared. Isn't it more important that families hit by loss of jobs and loss of health care be able to use their remainiing resources to keep their homes and care for their families rather than feed an automobile's gas tank?

    • I both drive and bike to work, but I have also commuted via public transportation at various stages in my life. It is vital that Ohio fund public transportation and committ significant funding towards public transportation systems throughout our state.

    • We need more public transportation, not less in Cleveland and GCRTA need to do a better job of running the system that they have.

    • In 2007 RTA won the Outstanding Public Transportation System Achievement Award from the American Public Transportation Association. Since I returned to Cleveland in 2008 and began riding public transportation, services continue to be cut. Public transportation is vital to the health of Cleveland and our planet. Please help RTA retain the quality service which earned it the #1 spot and give it the ability to maintain or increase its services rather than decreasing them. If RTA does reduce services as proposed, I know several of my fellow riders who have the option of driving will abandon public transportation. Please help them be better stewards of the planet by continuing to support public transportation and do not abandon those who do not have the option of driving to work. The proposed cuts to route 55 are personally disappointing as I routinely ride it in the evenings along with a significant number of other people.

    • Increased fees and decreased availability of public transportation are wrong because (a) they are primarily a tax on the poor and (b) they will encourage the use of vehicles that will cause more pollution than mass transit.
