A wonderful mans life ended on the 15th November last year. His name was Trevor Bird and he was only 52 years old.
Trevor was killed by a hit and run driver, Mr. Jason Doyle, who not only left the scene, but came back to try and retrieve the car. He reversed back, about to go over Trevors body, until a man out of a nearby house shouted at him so he ran away again.
Mr. Doyle was found to have traces of cocaine and alcohol in his system when he finally gave himself up some 14 hours later. He was convicted of causing death by dangerous driving. He was jailed for just four years. With good behaviour he will serve a mere two of those four years.
In the 10 months it has taken to bring Mr. Doyle to justice he has been allowed to drive. This should not be.
My intention is to get as many signatures together to have the law changed:
1 A license revoked immediately pending further enquiries
2 Tougher prison sentences - a judge can give up to 14 years for dangerous driving, it is about time this was imposed.

- There is no justice for victims and people who commit offences to a higher and lesser degree than the one against trevor know that at this moment in time their crimes will not be given the punishment they deserve.

- My fiance's brother was killed by a reckless driver who ended up walking away scott free. It's about time these irresponsible people who take a life through reckless/dangerous driving were given a sentence fitting to the crime, if you take a life in that manner I believe the minimum sentence should be 25 years with absolutely no chance of parole. The British legal system is a joke at times!

- Please change the law for causing death by dangerous driving under the influence too, as Tadley also lost 2 young boys in 2007 due to a drink driver. Nick Warnock was given 5 years for Jake Burden 18 and Lee Robinson 16 lives. 14 years is the max so why not give it too them, not a mere 4 or 5 years, R.I.P Trevor and Jake and Lee. They should also be banned from driving for life. Why give them a chance to do it again.

- The law is an ass. This man should have been given a lifte sentence for what he has done. He has destroyed this family's lives with his stupid, reckless act.

- The sentence should fit the crime and this has not happened. Two years for killing someone is an absolute joke!

- It is almost always the law abiding who pay a heavy price for such mindless acts that lead to death and serious injury. While the perpetrator, who has knowingly broken the law, is soon free to rebuild and continue their life. The victim pays the highest price but those close to the vicitim suffer for the rest of theirs. Parents, partners, siblings, children, grandchildren - in some cases not yet born. The impact on all, not forgetting employers and society as a whole, is immeasurable. I believe that when a driver leaves the scene of such an incident so preventing timely testing for alcolhol and drugs, as in this case, then there should be a minimum automatic ten year imprisonment without parole. Leaving the scene is a calculated act to prevent such detection. Passing trivial sentences on those who have run away and hid in such circumstances sends out the wrong message. I would also like charges brought against anyone who knowingly shelters an individual who has left such scene, as happened in this case.
