To Springfield: Pay Higher Education What You Owe

Sign this petition to demand that the State of Illinois pay its debt to higher education.

Springfield has been in arrears with its payments to the state of Illinois higher education system. As of today it has only paid 4 \% of its total commitments for this fiscal year.

Meanwhile, the universities and colleges have had to cut faculty salaries, increase class sizes, raise tuition, cut basic services because the state has refused to pay the bills.

Enough is enough! We all have to pay our bills, and so does the state.

    • State-supported higher education creates a strong workforce. When Illinois chooses not to support higher education, they encourage their college-age and adult learner population to spend tuition, housing, textbook money, etc elsewhere. Moreover, many students "fall in love" with the college experience and stay in the local college area. Illinois loses an educated workforce and potential income tax dollars.
