I ask your help in maintaining funding for Union Square Main Streets.
For the past four years Union Square Main Streets in Somerville, MA has been working with residents and businesses to improve the neighborhood. In that time that organization has made a positive impact and has greatly contributed to the vibrancy of Union Square.
A partial list of achievements includes the launch of the Union Square Farmers Market, the successful recruitment of small businesses, the creation of training and support programs for the community, community planning and advocacy, as well as participation in the Somerville Arts Councils ArtsUnion initiative.
Given the tough financial problems facing the city, the organization's funding, and as result its work, is in jeopardy. We respectfully request the City of Somerville to not cut funding to Union Square Main Streets and to continue its support of this important community organization.

- Union Square Main Streets is helping make major improvements to Union Square and the City. Please do not reduce Main Streets' great work or the new vibrancy it has brought to Union Square by reducing its funding level for 2009 -2010.

- USMS has been very effective in helping to improve Union Square for both businesses and residents like me. We are in a time of tough budget choices, but I believe that cutting back on USMS's mission will have serious ripple effects throughout the neighborhood.

- This is a vital program that has added so much to the discussion of what Union Square is and could be..Please re-think this funding cut and examine other ares of the budget that could afford to do with less. This program yields so much direction and leadership to the economic sustainability of Union Square....

- I think that Union Square Main Streets has done an amazing job bringing attention to all that Union Square has to offer. I also think that adding the farmer's market was inspired. We need to keep this group viable and effective. Now is not the time to cut funding for groups that aid in building our local businesses.

- City of Somerville: I own and operate the Villaris Self-Defense Center located in Union Square and have done so for over 25 years. In doing so for this long I feel I have become an Icon in Union square. One of the bright spots of being here for so long has been the support brought about by the assistance of Union Square Main Streets. Cutting funding for Main Streets would be a big mistake. Union Square Main streets has brought businesses of Union Square together in the Community. Without Main Streets my company would have had no idea of the business meetings and classes available to our businesses. These classes have allowed me to meet and interact with Aldermen, other businesses, and officials from the City that can help my business continue to be successful. By participating in demonstrations held during the Farmers Market my clients receive recognition and prestige which helps them develop Self Confidence and personal satisfaction. With todays economy in a state of ruin we cannot afford to los
