  • Development of this area is reprehensible. Smart development ensures that the quality of the land persists for future generations. This does not qualify as smart development; though, it does qualify as greedy and short-sighted. Those who come to see natural landscapes such as Bond Falls are not interested in being greeted by condominiums and golf courses. They are interested in landscapes that are absent of such eyesores. They will choose other areas to visit if the Upper Peninsula becomes another Disneyland.

I would hope that it remains in its natural condition for generations to come!   • The proposed land sale and private development on Project Lands does not meet the intent and the spirit of the FERC License. UPPCO and WPS promised a land management system that was open to all the public. Numerous brochures and company information made it clear that the land was to be retained for conservation purposes. UPPCO and WPS have now betrayed their public trust and concentrated on their immediate financial gain instead of the long term public interest. UPPCO and WPS can still show good faith and do the right thing by entering into a long-term conservation easement agreement with a land trust or other conservation group. We have always admired WPS in its professional commitment to its customers, its staff, and public service. We cannot tell you how disappointed we are with the current Board of Directors and the CEO for taking the company down a road that does not include public service and conservation.

  • Shoreline development resulting in exclusive use of the shoreline by the few and denying the public welcome access is akin to selling off our Upper Michigan beauty to the highest bidder. Ports, docks which do not include general public access could only benefit if a very limited number of ports were taxed to the owner at a deliberately high, "exclusive privilege rate" with all funds going to general public docks, ports and access. Taxing the owners to the hilt might discourage them altogether. The beautiful, wild shoreline should belong to all. Most of us love it the way it is.
