The Save the Historic Uptown Theatre petition is intended to increase awareness about the renovation and reuse potential of an important historic landmark and to document the public support that exists for its use as an entertainment venue. Compass Rose Cultural Crossroads, the sponsor of this petition, is NOT seeking monetary donations for the restoration of the theatre and is not associated with any groups or organizations that claim to raise money for a reuse project. The Uptown Theatre is privately owned and there is not an opportunity to make donations at this time. We encourage anyone who is interested in the preservation of the Uptown Theatre to sign the petition and to write a letter of support to the theatre's owners and to local government officials. We the undersigned wish to make known our concerns for the future of the historic Uptown Theatre at 4816 N. Broadway in Chicago. We believe that:

The Uptown Theatre is a unique architectural, historic, and cinematic treasure that is worthy of preservation as an entertainment venue. Nationwide, few so-called Movie Palaces or historic theatres of the Uptowns scale and grandeur have survived in their entirety. Most have been either demolished or completely gutted in short-sighted commercial ventures, often converting them to condos or shopping malls and leaving only the facades. The Uptown Theatre is considered one of the last, best theatres not yet renovated, and therefore offers a rare opportunity for a complete restoration project. It has already been declared a historic landmark both inside and out and is included on several city, state, and national historic buildings lists. Along with the Aragon Ballroom, the Riviera Theatre, the world-famous Green Mill jazz club, and the many elaborate terra-cotta buildings that line Lawrence and Broadway Avenues, the Uptown Theatre forms the core of a recognized historic district and for that reason alone must be restored.

The restoration of the Uptown Theatre is in fact the key to the revitalization of the entire Uptown neighborhood, one of the most culturally vibrant areas in Chicago. Uptown is favored by its enviable location near Lake Michigan; its diverse residents; its proximity to the well-established neighborhoods of Andersonville, Edgewater, and Wrigleyville; its excellent public transportation; and its abundance of attractive housing to make it the next region of Chicago to experience regrowth and development. The time is right and the interest exists within the community to restore the Uptown Theatre. Resurrecting Uptown as an entertainment district will attract money and tourism to the north side of Chicago.

Although the Uptown Theatre has remained closed for many years, studies indicate that it is structurally sound and a good candidate for restoration. An Urban Land Institute study, sponsored and funded by the Chicago Department of Planning and Development to help develop a vision for the market potential and planning/design of the Uptown Entertainment District, supports this conclusion. The ULI report states that the Uptown Theatre is the crown jewel of the Uptown District and one of the most outstanding theatres in the United States and that it must be restored. We hope to inspire civic leaders, urban planners, and other interested parties in selecting a reuse project that will restore and preserve, at a bare minimum, the faŠ·ade, the main lobby, and the grand auditorium. With only minor modification it can be reopened as an entertainment venue, cultural center, and reception /convention hall of which the City of Chicago can be proud. The restored theatre probably will be required to accommodate more uses than intended for by the original theatre, but this can be done sensitively and with respect to the original design.

The City of Chicago and the State of Illinois must take proactive roles in the restoration of the Uptown Theatre. As part of a TIF (tax incremented finance) district a portion of the necessary funds to begin such a project could be made available. At a minimum, funds should be granted for the stabilization of the building and to provide for minimal repairs to prevent further deterioration of the theatre. Time is of the essence. A building can be mothballed for future restoration but nothing lasts forever.

Because the Uptown Theatre is a national treasure, the public deserves to have a voice in the fate of this theatre. We ask that the public be kept informed of any plans in the works and be allowed to voice our opinion on such plans. To date, area residents and nationwide supporters of the theatre rely on speculation and rumor for updates. We hope that communication can be improved. We ask that any planning meetings be made open to the public, and that regular public meetings for the restoration of the theatre be initiated immediately.

Restoring the Uptown Theatre will help preserve the communitys appearance and character and maintain its unique identity and personality. It will provide our children, our childrens children, and all generations to come a glimpse of the stunning architecture of our forefathers and mothers. We thank you for your time and attention.

    • It was my privilege to tour the UPTOWN back in '77 during the Theatre Historical Soc. convention and have had a wonderful memory of its grandiose scale and opulence ever since. It is a shame that it has not been reused since the early '80s, but surely some enterprising group can find a suitable and sustaining use for it if they but try. True, Chicago has been good in restoring and patronizing such as the AUDITORIUM THEATRE, ORIENTAL, CHICAGO, NEW REGAL (AVALON) and PALACE theatres, so it may raise its head proudly on this account, but the unique UPTOWN is so much more a gigantic treasure that it merits its preservation on the grounds of being unique more than any other. If it must be the last such 'palace' restored in that city, it is the candidate of choice, and farsighted leaders will note that in future when a comparable facility of size is needed, they will have the fabulous UPTOWN to work with, unlike San Francisco and other cities which allowed their giant theatres to disappear, and then a few years la

    • Chicago has had a large number of great theatres, and is to be praised for restoring the CHICAGO, ORIENTAL, AUDITORIUM and PALACE, but their UPTOWN is a rare pleasure that would be tragic to lose. When I saw it during its last days of operation, I was overwhelmed at the vast grandeur of such a palace, and I hope dearly that the city and those with resources will see the need to preserve this, one of the last of this nations enormous palaces of entertainment. Your grandchildren will think ill of you if you do not.

    • As the director of a historic 1919 theater in downtown Decatur, I know the importance of saving downtown theaters. Each one is a treasure and asset for their city. Once they are gone, we lose them forever! I have personally toured the Uptown during a conference tour and believe it would be devastating to lose it.

    • I went to a Hawkwind concert there in the seventies, and loved every minute of it: the atmosphere, the style, the irreplaceable grace that is the Uptown. A masterpiece they won't be making any more of. When one visits sterile cinderblock places that even the Cineplex Odeons have become, one yearns for the great unspoken connection to the past and the possibilities of art and human endeavor that the Uptown truly is. Folks, let's keep what we have and make it sing. It woudl be a terrific place for concerts, cultural events, plays, boxing dances etc. Let's save it and make it work for today's audience. Why do you think so many suburban young professionals are moving back into the city today? It's because of the Uptowns, the Chicago theatres, the Steppenwolf, the magnificent architecture, the nightlife, the whole ambiance of the city. Walmarts and apartment buildings are to be had in the burbs. Uptown's are the jewels in the Urban Fabric that keep those kids coming back. Lose the Uptown? No way.

It's a real treat to watch historic films in the movie palaces for which they were created. People in communities everywhere should have more opportunities to see movies this way. I commend your effort to restore the Uptown as a historic movie palace that Chicagoans and movie lovers alike will value for decades to come. As a former South Sider (Evergreen Park), I would definitely visit a restored Uptown Theatre on my next trip to the Windy City. Best of luck fighting the good fight.

    • Historic theaters have become civic containers of their community's collective memory. They are heritage icons that allow citizens to identify with their communitys past, present and future. Cultural heritage, as seen in the endangered Uptown Theatre, once it is lost, can't be put back together again. Protecting the Uptown Theater maintains the intangible spirit of community.

    • I have visited the Uptown two times since its closure. My impression as a theatre profesional and as a former member of the Board of the League of Historic American Theatres is that it is one of the most significant endangered historic sites in Amerca. It's loss would be a great loss for the city of Chicago and the nation. While the economics of saving and operating the theatre may be daunting, I believe Chicago cannot afford to lose this irreplaceable landmark for future generations.

    • I am originally from the Chicagoland area - the theater scene is equal to New York. I now volunteer usher at the "Fabulous" FOX theatre in Atlanta, where I live. At one time the FOX here was slated for demolition. Today, nobody can understand why people would have thought that way. Theater buildings have such a social, architectural and cultural tie to our society. Stories about buildings can be shared, but it is the architecture that remains over the generations as the "living" example to teach us about our history and our society. Keep all the original pieces in tact, that you can (even if they need to be "sistered" with modern additions!) Come visit the FOX in Atlanta to see true theater preservation in action!
